Where to Stay in Shennongjia | Accommodation Guide
Hotels are everywhere in Shennongjia with a wide range of prices. Budget options start at 50 to 60 yuan per night, while high-end ones cost several hundred yuan. Rates vary greatly between peak and off-seasons.
Farmhouse inns are highly recommended. They offer decent living conditions and serve authentic local home-cooked meals. During the tourist peak season, be sure to book accommodation in advance to avoid trouble finding a room on arrival.
Local dishes are not uniquely exotic and can also be found in other regions. The local diet leans spicy, so remember to inform the restaurant owner in advance if you cannot eat spicy food.
Most tourists choose to stay in Muyu Town, the largest tourist hub in Shennongjia. It boasts complete transportation, daily amenities and accommodation services. Located midway between major scenic spots, it is home to around 80% of all visitors to Shennongjia.
The peak travel season falls from mid-July to mid-August, when crowds of senior citizens come here to escape the heat. Except for this summer vacation period and public holidays, rooms are generally abundant all year round, with numerous inns and restaurants lining the streets.
In off-seasons, you can easily find a room after arriving in town — many innkeepers will approach you actively. What’s more, walk-in rates are often cheaper than online bookings.
I arrived in Muyu Town on August 13. There were plenty of vacant rooms and people offering accommodation services. Just compare a few places before making your choice.
The town is small, and it takes only about 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other. There are two main parallel streets: the Front Street and the Back Street. The Back Street is quieter and houses some local government offices. The Front Street is bustling with hotels and restaurants. It is more convenient but slightly pricier. You can pick according to your preference.
The area around the long-distance bus station at the far end of the town is also lively. A Xinyijia Supermarket stands nearby for daily shopping. Restaurants cluster around the supermarket. Fierce competition brings diverse choices and transparent pricing, making it an ideal spot for regular meals.
For example, I ordered cold-water fish hot pot at my first meal for 80 yuan per jin, while the same dish only cost 48 yuan per jin at a restaurant near Xinyijia Supermarket later — quite a big price gap
