Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture features a monsoon mountain climate. It is free from intense heat in summer and severe cold in winter, with frequent fog and abundant rainfall throughout the year.
Thanks to its complex terrain and dramatic differences in altitude, the prefecture has an average elevation of around 1,000 meters. Its highest point stands over 3,000 meters above sea level, while the lowest is merely more than 60 meters. Local proverbs go: "People enjoy cool valleys in lowlands, while sitting around stoves in high mountains" and "Weather varies within ten li, and customs differ over a hundred li". The temperature drops as altitude rises. January sees the lowest temperatures of the year, and July the highest.
Special Reminder: Enshi has frequent rain and fog, with rainfall coinciding with hot weather. Continuous bad weather may disrupt your travel plans. It is advisable to avoid the rainy season and check local weather conditions in advance before your trip.
