Heming Lake Wetland Hot Spring Scenic Area
Heming Lake Wetland Hot Spring is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction. It is located at Nangan Village, Sanhe Township, Lindian County, at the confluence of the Wuyuer River and a tributary of the Nen River. The scenic area covers a total of 30,000 mu of wetland grasslands, lakes and reed marshes. It officially opened in April 2002.
The first-phase construction includes hot spring hotels, hot spring bathing facilities, hot spring apartments, conference rooms and a catering center. A wealth of recreational activities are available here, such as bamboo raft drifting, dragon boat races, waterfowl watching, wetland hot spring bathing, wetland exploration, and ice-snow hot spring experiences. The total investment in Heming Lake has reached 350 million yuan. The resort is divided into two major sections: the hot spring zone and the wetland zone.
The hot spring zone has 81 guest rooms, capable of accommodating 170 guests. The wetland zone features cozy wooden cabins with 57 rooms in total, providing lodging for 358 visitors. There are also two overwater restaurants with a combined seating capacity of 600 diners.
Perfectly integrating ice-snow activities with cold-region hot spring experiences, Heming Lake is a charming leisure and holiday resort with distinctive local features, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of cities and embrace the beauty of nature.
Heming Lake is also known as Mu Guiying Lake. According to legend, during the Northern Song Dynasty, wars broke out between the Song and Liao regimes. The female general Mu Guiying led tens of thousands of troops on a military campaign and arrived at this place. Back then, the area suffered from successive severe droughts. The land lay barren with no crops harvested, leaving local people destitute and displaced.
Moved by the people’s plight, Mu Guiying immediately ordered her soldiers to distribute military rations to the disaster-stricken villagers. She also set up an incense altar to pray for timely rainfall, and refrained from eating any grain for several days to save food. Her kindness deeply touched Guanyin Bodhisattva of the South China Sea, who sent celestial nectar to the mortal world. Before long, continuous drizzle fell for days on end.
After the rain, the land was transformed. Clear lakes appeared where horses and troops had trodden, and dense reeds grew luxuriantly. From then on, the region enjoyed favorable weather all year round. The lake teemed with plump fish, and vast reed beds rippled like rolling waves. On the banks, cattle and horses thrived, and rice fields exuded a sweet fragrance. Villagers could fetch fresh, cool and sweet water just by digging two meters underground. Local residents worked the fields in farming seasons and fished or hunted in leisure time, living a prosperous and peaceful life like people in a paradise on earth. To commemorate Mu Guiying’s virtues, the locals named the lake after her.
In scorching summer, the intense heat fades away the moment you step into Heming Lake. Far from worldly disturbances, you can indulge in idyllic rural fun and enjoy the refreshing coolness of crystal-clear lake water. As you drive near the resort, the first sights that greet you are an endless expanse of reed marshes and rows of uniquely styled holiday cabins along the shore. Bamboo rafts drift leisurely on the water, speedboats dart across the lake, and dragon boats race vigorously. Horses gallop on the grasslands, while elegant pavilions stand over the water in the distance. You can almost hear tourists’ cheerful laughter and feel the joy long forgotten.
Walking into the scenic area, you will be welcomed by the locals’ simple, honest smiles and hearty laughter. Strolling along red brick paths, you can admire the lush reed marshes and shimmering lakes up close, as well as creatively named cabins such as "Catfish Hut" and "Wild Duck Hut". Inside the cabins are traditional Northeast Chinese heated brick kang beds. Old newspapers line the walls, with a portrait of Chairman Mao hanging on them. Spending a night here lets you experience the simple rural life and recall old memories. Leaning against the lakeside rail and gazing up at the starry sky will stir up countless reveries.
Crossing a swaying suspension bridge, you will see numerous bamboo rafts lined up ahead. Drifting deep into the reed marshes on a raft is a wonderful chance to watch wild birds. Along the waterways, you may spot nests built by wild ducks and other waterfowl, with unhatched eggs resting quietly inside. Flocks of startled birds circle overhead, reluctant to leave their unborn young. Looking northeast from the raft, you will see a grassland racecourse, where riders gallop freely or wander leisurely, showcasing the bold spirit of northern ethnic groups. As the saying goes, southerners excel at punting while northerners are skilled at horse riding — here you can experience both.
A speedboat ride on the lake offers another delightful scene: shoals of unnamed fish leap out of the water one after another, chasing the boat as its propellers stir up rolling waves. When the speedboat slows down and glides through the dense reeds, you will feel the serenity of hidden paths amid lush vegetation. Emerging from the reed marshes, a vast stretch of blue water unfolds. Grey cranes, wild ducks and various water birds fly overhead, chasing and chirping joyfully above the water. They blend perfectly with the lake and sky, forming a vivid natural painting.
Follow the lakeshore, and a winding overwater corridor will lead you to an aquatic pavilion. Here, you can sip Northeast local spirits and taste fresh lake fish and shrimp while enjoying the serene scenery and letting your thoughts wander. The pavilion floor has hollowed sections where lake water flows directly beneath your feet. Water constantly cascades down from the roof, resembling a waterfall cave. Wild ducks often swim past the windows, catching your eye. Standing on the corridor, you may notice two tiny fish chasing each other and lingering for a long time. The sight makes people sigh that fish are freer than humans, and brings a touch of Buddhist meditation and peace to the heart.
Taking a boat further into the reed marshes allows for total relaxation as you splash water and gaze at the sky. Occasionally, you may come across wild duck eggs. Tourists cherish wild animals and never disturb them.
Heming Lake abounds with dozens of wild fish including common carp, crucian carp, grass carp, bighead carp, snakehead and river crabs. More than a hundred species of waterfowl inhabit the area, such as red-crowned cranes, wild geese, white cranes and wild ducks.
The wetland zone provides a full range of entertainment: bamboo raft drifting, dragon boat races, pedal boats, grassland horse racing, and wildlife observation (wild ducks, red-crowned cranes, egrets, water caltrops and lotus flowers). Visitors can also watch performances of the vigorous Northeast Yangge and other local folk shows. In winter, you can enjoy ice sledding, ice fishing and winter hunting here.
