Jiangjiehe National Scenic Area is situated on the middle reaches of the Wujiang River, 45 kilometres from downtown Weng'an County, covering a total area of 311 square kilometres.
It was designated a provincial-level scenic area in 1995 and officially approved as a national-level scenic area in December 2009.
The scenic spot lies along the middle section of the Mazun Provincial Highway. It is 180 kilometres from Guiyang, 132 kilometres from Duyun and 100 kilometres from Zunyi, enjoying easy access to transportation.
The Wujiang River is the largest river in Guizhou and the biggest tributary of the Yangtze River. The section flowing through Weng'an County is commonly known as Jiangjiehe. Stretching 52 kilometres along the middle Wujiang River, it is the most fascinating stretch of the whole waterway.
Within Weng'an territory, the Yongjiang River (also called Weng'an River), a tributary of the Wujiang, flows northward into the main river, while the Xiangjiang River runs southward to join it, creating numerous spectacular canyon landscapes.
The area is dotted with natural scenery, historical sites and cultural attractions. It integrates mountains, rivers, caves, bridges, forests, gardens and waterfalls, featuring grandeur, wonder, peril, grace and seclusion. Every step reveals a new view, and the canyon scenery is breathtaking. It is an ideal destination for sightseeing and leisure getaways.
The landscape combines jagged peaks, dangerous shoals, canyon woodlands, cliffside caves, mist-shrouded still lakes and the bridge spanning the natural moat.
Following the impoundment of Goupitan Hydropower Station, the largest hydropower project on the Wujiang River, the water level has risen by more than 150 metres, forming a water surface of nearly 30 square kilometres in Weng'an County.
Former peaks and hills have turned into scattered islets. Lush vegetation has become enchanting aquatic forests. Steep precipices now look gentle and approachable. The once turbulent waves have turned clear and calm. Peaks, islands, canyons and tranquil lakes merge into a unique waterscape.
You may visit the ancient ferry where the Red Army forced a crossing over the Wujiang River. Admire towering bizarre peaks, the elegant Jiangtian Writing Brush Peak, and the mysterious deep valleys of Xianggou Forest.
Xianggou Forest boasts winding river valleys and deep watercourses flanked by fantastic mountains. Some are green jagged summits, some are layered steep cliffs, some are sheer rock faces, and others are covered with grotesque stones. A clear brook gurgles gently with shimmering ripples.
The riverbanks are overgrown with ancient trees and dense foliage. Twisted vines crisscross everywhere, and thick moss blankets the ground. The whole valley is filled with lush greenery and serene atmosphere.
Its scenery is totally different from the adjacent Jiangjiehe Grand Canyon, presenting a rustic yet fresh, bold yet tranquil charm.
Hop on a speedboat and appreciate the magnificent gifts of nature. You will feel fully integrated with nature and enjoy an utterly relaxing journey.
