It was one of the revolutionary base areas of the former Hunan-Jiangxi Soviet Region and is designated as a Pingxiang Municipal Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
The mansion is located in Huatang Village, Qinting Town, Lianhua County, Jiangxi Province. It is just 1 kilometre from the county seat and can be reached directly along Yong'an Street.
It was originally the private residence of Zhu Yifan and his brother. Zhu Yifan served as Chinese classical tutor to the Xuantong Emperor of the late Qing Dynasty and was conferred the title of Junior Guardian of the Heir Apparent by imperial edict. Covering more than 3,000 square metres, the compound adopts the architectural style of southern ancestral halls with brick-and-timber structures. It boasts magnificent scale and exquisite craftsmanship.
From the end of 1930 to 1931, it housed the Southeast Hunan-Jiangxi Prefectural Party Committee and the Southeast Hunan-Jiangxi Soviet Government. In 1931, it was run as the Lenin School.
From October 8 to 15, 1931, the First Congress of the CPC Hunan-Jiangxi Provincial Committee was convened here, marking the official founding of the Hunan-Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee.
From October 17 to 25 the same year, the First Workers', Peasants' and Soldiers' Congress of Hunan-Jiangxi Province was also held on the site, establishing the Hunan-Jiangxi Provincial Soviet Government.
Many senior generals of New China, including Hu Yaobang, Peng Dehuai, Wang Zhen, Xiao Ke, Wang Shoudao, Chen Yi, Xiang Ying and Zeng Shan, once fought and lived in Huatang Official Mansion.
In September 1932, the Fifth County Congress of the CPC was held here.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the compound was used as the campus of Huatang Primary School and a base for revolutionary tradition education.
It was listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit in 1984.
