Shandong Changyi National Marine Ecological Special Reserve

Shandong Changyi National Marine Ecological Special Reserve is China’s only national marine special reserve designated mainly for the protection and management of the tamarisk forest ecosystem, as well as the first national marine special reserve in Shandong Province.

Situated on the southern shore of Laizhou Bay of the Bohai Sea in Changyi City, the reserve covers a total area of 2,929.28 hectares, encompassing diverse ecological types such as tamarisk forests, tidal flat wetlands, marine waters and coastal zones. The natural tamarisk forest stretches across 2,070 hectares.

Tamarisks begin to sprout new inflorescences every May. For months until September, the reserve is blanketed in seas of blossoms. Old blooms fade while new ones emerge, with three successive flowering cycles that create an endless stretch of flowers.
