Jiuzhi Five Bridges

Location: Wuwei Village, Jiangyin Economic Development Zone, Jingjiang City Period: Late Qing Dynasty

Brief Introduction The official name of this bridge is Jiuzhi Five Bridges. The entire bridge is built of stone slabs and stone columns, measuring 20.5 meters in length and 2.1 meters in width. Villagers commonly refer to it as the Black Bridge, and it has a history of nearly one hundred years.

Four large Chinese characters "Jiuzhi Five Bridges" are carved respectively on the north and south horizontal beams of the bridge. On the two stone columns at the southern end, an antithetical couplet can still be faintly discerned: "Like this bridge, years roll by yet the name Five endures; By whose merit, east and west stand paired as two structures."

Another couplet is carved on the two northern columns: "A broken waterway where ten li of tides turn back; Seafarers from all lands hoist full sails when first putting out to sea."

Walking across the stone-slab bridge, you will see lush green trees all around and water flowing beneath the span, evoking an immediate sense of simple yet profound historical gravity.
