Heyeping Grassland, Wuzhai County

Heyeping Grassland is the largest subalpine meadow in North China. Located 30 kilometers south of Wuzhai County, the Heyeping Ecotourism Zone sits at an altitude of 2,783 meters at the junction of Ningwu, Wuzhai and Kelan counties, serving as a core tourist destination of Wuzhai. Towering ancient trees blanket the mountain with dense foliage that blocks the sunlight, earning it a reputation as a cool summer resort alongside Mount Wutai.
Starting from the source of the Qinglian River, visitors pass through the verdant Luya Valley and head west to Heyeping, 30 kilometers away from the county seat. It gets its name from its shape, which resembles an enormous lotus leaf. Standing at 2,784 meters above sea level, the subalpine meadow of Heyeping is the highest peak of the Guancen Mountain Range, hailed as the "Jadeite of the Plateau". Spanning nearly 40,000 mu, the meadow unfolds atop the peak like an endless lotus leaf. Its high-altitude microclimate creates stunning ever-changing scenery. Thin mist drifts across the clear blue sky out of nowhere; when fog shrouds the flat summit, boundless misty waves stretch far into the distance, timeless and ethereal, just like a fairyland. Tourists can wander leisurely on horseback beneath blue skies and white clouds, venturing deep into Heyeping to fully soak in the breathtaking beauty of the subalpine meadow.
Part of the Guancen Mountain Range, Heyeping features a broad, rectangular flat expanse on its summit. Covered entirely in lush green grass and shaped like a lotus leaf, it lends its name to the landform and serves as an outstanding natural pasture. Herds of cattle and horses graze here, with records showing over 10,000 head of livestock at the peak of each year.
Heyeping consists of North General Platform, South General Platform, and the valley connecting the two. North General Platform rises 2,784 meters above sea level, higher than the main peak of nearby Luya Mountain across the way. Dozens of lakes of varying sizes dot both North and South General Platforms. These water pools hold water all year round, and most of them are perfectly round in shape. Some people even speculate they were formed by meteorite impacts, a marvelous testament to the extraordinary craftsmanship of nature.
