Ancient Dai Prefecture City

A National Historical and Cultural City
The ancient city boasts immense historical value. Over its more than 2,300 years of history, it successively served as the administrative seat of Yanmen Commandery, Dai Prefecture, Military Governor’s Mansion, Military Defense Circuit, and Zhenwu Garrison. It stands out as a vital political hub, powerful military frontier garrison, thriving commercial port and renowned cultural city on ancient China’s northern border, hailed in historical records as “the Bulwark of the Imperial Domain” and “the Key to the Northern Gate”.
The distinguished architect Liang Sicheng once praised the ancient city as “an exquisitely planned city”.
This ancient city witnessed many pivotal historical events: the implementation of King Wuling of Zhao’s reform of Hu Clothing and Mounted Archery, the birthplace of the ancient marriage alliance policy, the site of the Yanmen Incident, the rallying point for Li Keyong’s campaign to restore the Tang Dynasty, and the garrison where the Yang Generals defended against the Liao forces. It is also depicted in classic literary works such as Water Margin and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Today, the ancient city preserves an exceptionally rich array of cultural relics. Inside and outside the city lie 216 historical sites spanning the Neolithic Age, Warring States Period, Qin and Han dynasties, Sui and Tang dynasties, Song and Yuan dynasties, as well as Ming and Qing dynasties. Among them, 4 are Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level and 8 at the Provincial Level.
Three top-tier national-level protected cultural relics are located within the city proper: Bianjing Tower, the Ashoka Pagoda and the Dai Prefecture Confucian Temple.
  • Bianjing Tower is the tallest and largest tower-style structure along the entire Great Wall, recognized by Great Wall specialists as “the No.1 Tower of the Ten-Thousand-Li Great Wall”.
  • The Ashoka Pagoda, an ancient pagoda of the Yuan Dynasty, is one of merely 19 pagodas nationwide that enshrine the true Buddha relics of Sakyamuni, carrying extraordinary cultural relic value.
  • The Dai Prefecture Confucian Temple ranks as the largest prefectural Confucian temple in North China.
Besides these, numerous heritage sites scatter across the ancient city, including the western city wall and the barbican of the West Gate, the Martial Temple, City God Temple, General Li Mu Temple, Military Defense Circuit Yamen, Prefectural Government Office and Ciyun Nunnery. There are also a great many residential buildings that serve as exemplary northern Chinese folk dwellings.
The Ancient City Museum houses more than 8,000 cultural relics in its collection, over 700 of which are classified as national precious cultural relics.
