Yanmen Pass is an integral component of the Great Wall, a World Cultural Heritage Site. It holds the titles of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction, One of Shanxi’s Top Ten Tourism Brands, Shooting Base for Shanxi Writers’ Film & Television Culture, and National Hiking & Fitness Trail. It is the ancient mountain pass with the longest history, most frequent warfare, highest renown and far-reaching influence, hailed as “The First Pass Under Heaven”.
Yanmen Pass Scenic Area centers on the historical remains and ruins of the Yanmen Pass military defense system, forming a tourist zone featuring frontier culture, Great Wall culture and mountain pass culture. The scenic area covers a total area of 30 square kilometers. Within the zone lie a complete set of historical architectural relics of varying grades, functions and forms, including the pass city, sections of the Great Wall, frontier stockades, military forts, beacon towers and ancient post roads. Together they shape the desolate, solemn, grand and magnificent frontier landscape unique to Yanmen Pass, demonstrating the historical functions and vicissitudes of this famed ancient pass, and recounting the dramatic changes and pivotal events it has witnessed over more than 3,000 years. Its profound historical heritage and rich cultural connotations render it one of a kind and unrivaled among scenic areas of the same type.
Over more than three millennia, Yanmen Pass has been inextricably linked to the destiny of the Chinese nation. As a vital strategic choke point on ancient China’s northern border, it witnessed and shaped the course of Chinese history. As a convergence zone of Central Plains civilization and nomadic culture, it experienced the arduous course of ethnic integration and accumulated splendid quintessence of multi-ethnic cultures. As a time-honored commercial thoroughfare in Chinese history, it reflected the rise and fall of ancient border trade and fostered the glorious legacy of Shanxi merchants.
Since large-scale restoration and development with a total investment of 400 million yuan launched in 2009, the ancient Yanmen Pass has presented itself to the world as a brand-new frontier cultural tourist resort integrating catering, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping and entertainment services.
Transportation Guide
1. Highway
(1) From Beijing
Route A: Beijing → Datong → Shuozhou → Yanmen Pass → Dai County
Route B: Beijing → Laiyuan → Lingqiu → Dai County → Yanmen Pass
(2) From Hebei Province
Route A: Shijiazhuang → Taiyuan → Xinzhou → Dai County (entirely expressway) → Yanmen Pass
Route B: Fuping → Wutai Mountain → Xinzhou → Dai County (entirely expressway) → Yanmen Pass
(3) From Shaanxi Province
Route A: Fugu → Baode → Wuzhai → Yuanping → Dai County → Yanmen Pass
Route B: Fugu → Baode → Xinzhou (Xinbao Expressway) → Dai County → Yanmen Pass
(4) From Henan Province
Zhengzhou-Jiaozuo-Shanxi Expressway → Jincheng → Changzhi → Taiyuan → Xinzhou → Dai County → Yanmen Pass
2. Railway
Route A: All cities nationwide → Taiyuan → Dai County, then transfer by highway to Yanmen Pass
Route B: Beijing → Laiyuan → Lingqiu → Dai County, then transfer by highway to Yanmen Pass
3. Airplane
Route A: All cities nationwide → Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, then transfer by highway to Yanmen Pass
Route B: All cities nationwide → Wutai Mountain Airport (Hongdao Town, Dingxiang County), then transfer by highway to Yanmen Pass
There are three access roads leading to Yanmen Pass Scenic Area:
Exit the Dayun Expressway at Xinguangwu Toll Station, turn east and head south for 7 kilometers along National Highway 208, then enter the scenic area from the north pass (Houyaopu Service Area).
Exit the Dayun Expressway at Dai County Toll Station. At the intersection of the expressway connector and National Highway 208 / 108, turn left (north) onto National Highway 208, drive 30 kilometers north along the winding mountain road to enter the scenic area from the north pass (Houyaopu Service Area).
Alternative branch: Go straight at the intersection of the expressway connector and National Highway 208, follow the ring road of National Highway 108, turn left (north) at the junction with the south tourist highway of Yanmen Pass, drive 15 kilometers north to reach the south entrance of the scenic area, then hike 2 kilometers along the ancient pass road to enter from the south pass.
Depart from Dai County seat, take the south tourist highway of Yanmen Pass and drive 15 kilometers north to the scenic area’s south entrance, then hike 2 kilometers along the ancient pass road to enter from the south pass (Qianyaopu Service Area).
A 10-kilometer circular tourist highway inside the scenic area connects Qianyaopu Service Area (south pass) and Houyaopu Service Area (north pass).
