China Root Art City

Dear friends, along the way you can see numerous root carving workshops. This is China Root Art City, one of the country’s most renowned root carving production hubs, designated as a root carving creation base by both the China Folk Literature and Art Association and the Fujian Provincial Folk Literature and Art Association.

Developed and funded by Jian'ou Lvyun Real Estate Development Co., Ltd., China Root Art City broke ground at the end of 2007. It boasts a total construction area of 45,000 square meters, planned under the layout of "one core, one belt, one zone and multiple nodes". Three zones — Craftsmen’s Garden, Yefang Station and Changting Residence — have been completed, shaped like a cluster of lush green bamboo leaves. Across the lake stand Guizong Rock and Dami Rock, collectively hailed as the "Little Wuyi Mountains". To its east lies the Jianxi River (Beijin Lake); to the west stands the tree-covered Oxbow Ridge adjacent to Gem Rock; to the north sits Plum Rock, home to the ruins of Pingshan Academy. This land is hailed as an auspicious feng shui site described in the old saying: "The black ox bows its head to lush waters and rich grass, promising perpetual vitality and lasting prosperity."

China Root Art City seamlessly integrates root carving craftsmanship with traditional Chinese architectural aesthetics. Its neo-Chinese style buildings exude timeless antique charm. Courtyards, walls, stone steps, doorways, windows and winding secluded garden paths all embody the natural beauty of harmony between humanity and nature. It unites millennia-old root carving art, an ancient artistic pedestrian street and exquisite riverside residences in one compound.

Wuyi Root Art City features sprawling private gardens, an exclusive high-end clubhouse and a cruise terminal plaza. The enchanting surrounding natural scenery captivates visitors, with layered multi-view landscapes reminiscent of classical Suzhou and Hangzhou gardens. Dear friends, Jian'ou root carving has evolved for nearly half a century since the late 1960s, evolving into a distinctive local art form and a regionally competitive cultural industry with a stellar reputation among China’s fine art and root carving circles.

Jian'ou root carving artisans work in harmony with the natural grain and form of timber, refining raw materials into ingenious artworks that unite man-made craft with natural creation. Its products fall into three major categories: practical functional pieces, ornamental displays and high-end artistic sculptures.

Today, nearly 10,000 practitioners are engaged in root carving in Jian'ou. The Root Carving Fine Arts Association, founded in the early 1990s, was renamed the Root Carving Art Association after 2000. It counts 49 top-tier craft professionals, including China Masters of Root Carving Art and Senior Industrial Artists.

Jian'ou is home to over 200 root carving manufacturers operating a full industrial chain covering raw material harvesting, production processing, logistics and sales. The sector has grown into large-scale industrialized production, with retail outlets across major Chinese cities. Its works are exported widely to Europe, America, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia
