Liuzhuang, the Former Residence of Zuo Zongtang, is situated at Liujiachong in Xunshan Village, Zhangshu Town, 15 kilometres south of the county seat.

In 1843, Zuo Zongtang spent about nine hundred taels of silver he had earned from teaching to purchase 70 mu of farmland at Liujiachong. He personally designed and built a brick-and-timber courtyard covering more than 4 mu with 48 rooms. Fond of the unyielding character of willow trees, he named the residence "Liuzhuang" (Willow Manor).

Zuo Zongtang lived here for 14 years after the completion until he moved to Changsha in 1857. During this period, apart from studying farming and sericulture, he extensively researched astronomy, military affairs, history and current affairs. He read widely and bore the whole nation in mind. His profound knowledge of state governance and national affairs laid a solid foundation for his great achievements and lasting fame in history.
