The Shrine of Marquis Zuo Wengxiang is located in Bajia Village, Wenxing Town. It is also known as the Prime Minister’s Shrine or Lord Zuo’s Shrine.

After Zuo Zongtang passed away in the eleventh year of the Guangxu reign (1885), the imperial court granted him exceptionally generous posthumous honours. Apart from bestowing high prestige upon him after death, the court enshrined his memorial tablet in the Xianliang and Zhaozhong Shrines in the capital. Special memorial shrines were also erected in his hometown and the provinces where he rendered meritorious service to commemorate his achievements, fully demonstrating the imperial court’s high regard for him.

In the thirteenth year of the Guangxu reign (1887), Wu Dazheng, Governor of Hunan Province, built this shrine by imperial order. Numerous trees and flowers were planted in front of the shrine. The interior is spacious and bright, with the main hall and side rooms neatly arranged. Winding corridors lead to quiet secluded spots. Doors and windows are carved with delicate patterns of flowers, plants, birds and beasts, exuding exquisite elegance. The courtyard is filled with blooming flowers and tall trees, casting dappled shadows. The whole complex features unique architectural designs, magnificent momentum and graceful contours, all reflecting the noble status and supreme glory of the shrine’s dedicatee.

Inside the shrine stands a portrait of Zuo Zongtang. Exhibitions also include records of his feats, as well as elegiac couplets, poems and eulogies written by his friends and subordinates.
