Lan Yu was a founding hero of the Ming Dynasty, and his ancestral home lies in Taiping Village, Dankou Town, Chengbu.
The Former Residence of Lan Yu was first built in the 5th year of the Longqing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1571). Originally the Lan Clan Ancestral Hall, it was renamed "Former Residence of Lan Yu" in memory of Lan Yu. It underwent successive expansions from the 21st to the 23rd year of the Republic of China (1932–1934). A couplet hangs by the gate:
His founding feats sustain Guizhou’s thriving lineage;
Renewing great exploits, he revives the Ru’nanclan legacy.
Color painted patterns adorn the gate facade and outer eave walls. Entering the front hall, one reaches an opera stage. On the left side of the central hall stands a stone stele inscribed "Ancestral Tombs of the Nation’s Forebears". In the middle of the upper hall sits a palace-style shrine niche topped with upturned flying eaves and two horizontal inscribed boards. One bears the inscription "Generations Uphold Clan Merits", the other "Divine Spirits Dwell Here". The complex covers a land area of 1,234 square meters.
The Former Residence of Lan Yu is a brick-and-timber quadrangle compound featuring three main halls and two side wings. It sits on a rectangular plinth with a total width of 15.2 meters and an overall depth of 46 meters, boasting a construction area of 699.2 square meters. This multi-purpose complex integrates functions including ancestor worship, clan assemblies, clan rule management, study and recreational activities. Boasting a well-planned layout and complete facilities, the compound is distinguished by local architectural characteristics such as memorial archways, opera stages, gable walls and gracefully upturned flying eaves. The stone carvings, wood engravings, clay sculptures and color paintings throughout the ancestral hall hold high artistic value. Elaborately carved mythological motifs decorate numerous wooden and stone components, such as the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, Guanyin Seated on a Lotus Throne, Phoenix Spreading Its Wings, Peacock Spreading Its Tail, Swallows Carrying Mud, Qilin Ascending to Heaven and Blooming Plum Blossoms. On May 19, 2002, the Hunan Provincial People’s Government designated it a Provincial Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit
