Nanshan Mountain covers a total area of 152 square kilometers, with 230,000 mu of grassy hills forming an unbroken expanse. Its highest peak stands at an altitude of 1,940 meters, and the average elevation hits 1,760 meters. The maximum temperature reaches 28°C, while the annual average temperature is 11°C, presenting a typical alpine tableland grassland landscape.
Ascending from the mountain foot via the winding Ninety-Eight Switchbacks, visitors will notice distinct zoned vegetation shaped by climatic differences: bamboo seas, primeval forests, shrublands and grassy hills appear in successive layers. Rolling mounds spread across the scenic area, crisscrossed by mountain streams and waterfalls, dotted with 48 meadows and 48 brooks that stay lush green all year round.
In spring and summer, azaleas of all hues burst into full bloom across every hillside, weaving a brilliant sea of mountain blossoms against emerald grass. Adventurous travelers can also experience the thrills and heart-stirring excitement of alpine drifting. When autumn and winter arrive, the sky unfolds a clear blue dotted with white clouds, as cattle and sheep wander leisurely beneath the vast, pale sky, refreshing the mind and spirit. At times mist surges and rolls through the valleys, and occasionally the red sun breaks through cloud layers, unveiling an infinite variety of breathtaking vistas.
Blending the grandeur of northern grasslands with the delicate grace of southern mountain meadows, Nanshan Mountain earns the laudatory title of "Hulunbuir of the South". Free of any pollution in its soil, air and water, it has been awarded the honor of "Top Green Ecological Environment" by the Ministry of Agriculture of China.
Laoshanjie, the mountain pass described by Lu Dingyi during the Red Army’s Long March, lies at the foot of Nanshan, still covered by intact secondary primeval forests to this day. Nanshan has been built into the largest modern mountain pasture in southern China and is under development as a national-level tourist attraction. Each season boasts unique charms, permeated by a faint lingering aroma of milk. It has become an ideal destination for summer escape, health recuperation and leisure travel.
