Haijia Ridge

Haijia Ridge is situated at the southwestern tip of Jiaxi Town, bordering Hudong Town and facing the sea to the south. The mountain range stretches six to seven kilometers from north to south, boasting numerous peaks including Taiping Summit, Dragon Boat Summit, Human Head Summit and Lotus Peak. Its main peak stands 214 meters above sea level. The entire ridge resembles a giant dragon charging toward the sea, presenting an imposing and magnificent sight. Within the scenic area stand queer peaks and lofty ridges, set against blue waters and green hills shaded by dense trees. Natural and cultural landscapes blend harmoniously to enhance each other’s beauty. From ancient times to the present, the distinctive coastal scenery of Haijia Ridge has always captivated visitors and made them linger on.
The main peak rises right beside the sea. Standing atop it, you will enjoy a broad view with striking contrasting scenes. The vast sea stretches out with rolling blue waves dotted by sailing boats, merging with the sky into an endless expanse. Inside the ridge, undulating mountains are covered in dark green foliage and veiled in wispy mist. Looking down over the mountains and the sea, you will marvel at the grace of all living creatures.
Haijia Ridge features a unique landform. Massive boulders cling to the mountain body. After hundreds of millions of years of weathering, a great many vivid pictographic rocks have taken shape.
  • Lotus Rock: It looks exactly like a budding lotus flower, with lifelike petals and stamens. It is also known as the "Auspicious Throne of Guanyin".
  • Three Stars Rock: Three granite boulders each weighing dozens of tons stand upright on the peak, resembling lucky star peaches in a remarkably lifelike manner.
  • Golden Lion Rock: Shaped like a lion lying prone on the beach, playing with surging waves and roaring toward the open sea.
  • Dead Sea Cliff: Steep cliffs plunge straight into the sea. Turbulent waves crash against the rock face, sending sprays flying and producing deafening roars.
This area is known for rough waters and strong currents, and has long been a forbidden zone for fishing boats and passing vessels. On clear days when the rest of the sea lies calm as a mirror, huge waves rage here. On cloudy, rainy or windy days, the waves surge several meters high. The pounding surf creates sprays of mist, and the thunderous roar of the waves is breathtaking.
Not far from the sea on Haijia Ridge lies a cave called Golden Flower Cave, also known as Demon Subduing Cave. It was listed as one of the "Eighteen Caves of South Guangdong" targeted for suppression by the imperial court of the Northern Song Dynasty. Legend has it that the cave extends for dozens of li, with uneven widths and an unfathomable depth. Inside flow mountain springs and hang stalactites. Two folk tales about the cave have been widely passed down.
According to the first tale, a powerful and vicious sea demon once dwelled here, repeatedly harming local residents and passing ships. The emperor appointed the famous general Yang Wenguang to lead troops to eliminate the fiend. The demon relied on its dark magic to fight back, putting Yang Wenguang in a difficult position. Later, Yang invited Guanyin of the South China Sea, who finally subdued the demon. No more mischief occurred in the cave ever since.
The second story goes that corrupt local officials in the Northern Song Dynasty imposed heavy taxes and levies, pushing people to the brink of starvation. Righteous men rallied the people to stage an uprising and garrisoned inside Golden Flower Cave. The treacherous terrain, internal water sources and ample space for grain and troops made the cave almost impregnable. One defender at the entrance could hold off thousands of enemies. Having no way to capture the cave, Yang Wenguang reported the situation to the court. The imperial government punished the corrupt officials and disbanded the rebel army, putting an end to the uprising.
Perched on the summit of Human Head Summit is Lotus Peak Temple, built in the mid-Ming Dynasty on a large scale. Due to the passage of time, the main halls and side rooms have collapsed, yet their foundations remain intact. The mountain gate is well-preserved, with inscriptions on the horizontal plaques still clearly legible.
Thanks to its strategic terrain, Haijia Ridge has served as a key coastal defense stronghold ever since the establishment of the Jieshi Garrison. Troops were stationed here for years, and numerous battles were fought on this land. It was a major battlefield on land and sea during the resistance against Japanese raiders. Many patriotic officers and soldiers lost their lives here and were buried on the ridge, with well-known tombs such as General’s Tomb, Widow’s Grave and Lady’s Watchtower Tomb remaining to this day. Every mountain and stream in the Haijia Ridge Scenic Area is accompanied by moving or beautiful legends.
