The Eighth Route Army Taihang Memorial Hall is the only large-scale military-themed memorial hall in China comprehensively documenting the 8-year War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression by the Eighth Route Army and various base areas in North China. It serves as an outstanding patriotic education base integrating education, scientific research and tourism
A deputy-division-level institution directly under the Cultural Relics Bureau of Shanxi Province, it is located in the county seat of Wuxiang County, Shanxi Province, in the Taihang Mountains—where the Eighth Route Army Headquarters was stationed for a long time. Nestled against Fenghuang Mountain and facing the Zhangshui River, the memorial hall boasts beautiful scenery and convenient transportation, with the Taiyuan-Jiaozuo Railway running through the county and the Yuhuang and Qinwen Highways intersecting here.
Covering an area of 180,000 square meters, the complex is divided into two main sections: the Main Exhibition Area and the Scenic Area.
- Main Exhibition Area: Eighth Route Army History Hall, Eighth Route Army Generals Hall, Japanese Invasion Atrocities Hall.
- Scenic Area: Eighth Route Army Guerrilla Tactics Demonstration Hall, Eighth Route Army War of Resistance Monument, Eighth Route Army Heroic Forest of Steles, Marshal Xu Xiangqian Memorial Pavilion.
Fenghuang Mountain is covered with lush green trees, blooming flowers and winding paths. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the towering, rolling Taihang Mountains and the clear, meandering Zhangshui River below.
During the great War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the heroic Eighth Route Army fought fearlessly and achieved brilliant victories. To commemorate this glorious history, people in the old revolutionary base areas proposed building the Eighth Route Army Headquarters Memorial Hall in the late 1970s, submitting the proposal for central leadership approval.
On September 28, 1979, when Deng Xiaoping, Yang Shangkun and Pu Anxiu reviewed the exhibition design, Deng Xiaoping emphasized: "Do not only focus on leading organs and leaders; reflect the heroic deeds of all Eighth Route Army soldiers and base area people united against aggressors. History is written by the people." He personally inscribed the hall’s name: "Eighth Route Army Taihang Memorial Hall".
Guided by Deng Xiaoping’s instructions, the exhibition follows the principle of "Comprehensive Coverage, Three Key Focuses": fully documenting the history of the Eighth Route Army and base areas, while highlighting the Northern Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Eighth Route Army Headquarters, and the core Taihang Base Area.
The memorial hall was officially completed and opened on September 3, 1988. Since its opening, under the guidance of the Party Central Committee and governments at all levels, it has developed vigorously and achieved remarkable social benefits, receiving over 1.8 million visitors—including guests from dozens of countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Austria and Australia.
In 1999, the memorial hall established the "Eighth Route Army Spirit" Lecture Team, which has given more than 50 performances across the province and nationwide, achieving excellent results.
