Scenic Introduction
Formerly known as Wanhua Village, Caozhou Hundred Peony Garden was first built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, witnessing vicissitudes of time and carrying numerous legendary stories. In 1982, after General Secretary Hu Yaobang inspected the garden, the government allocated special funds for its reconstruction. Today, the garden covers over 100 mu of land, planted with 200,000 ornamental tree peonies and 100,000 herbaceous peonies.
It operates a seedling breeding base spanning more than 2,300 mu for tree peonies and herbaceous peonies, supplying over 2 million high-quality seedlings to domestic and overseas markets each year. The garden employs 32 senior and intermediate technical specialists, plus 450 production and management staff. It stands as a key ornamental tree peony park in Caozhou, as well as a major production and export base for commercial tree peonies and herbaceous peonies.
Renowned as the "Garden of Rare Peony Varieties" for its extensive collection of precious tree peonies, the garden boasts nine major color series: yellow, red, blue, white, black, green, purple, pink and multi-color, totaling over 520 cultivars.
Independent-bred varieties include Saixuet Pagoda, Chunhong Jiaoyan, Qinglong Zhenbao, Sipinhong, Mochi Zhenghui, and Lümu Yinyu. Treasured traditional strains such as Yaohuang, Sapphire, Pear Blossom Snow and Zhanghua Case have won 27 national scientific and technological awards including Excellence Award, New Variety Award and High-Quality Award.
The self-bred cultivar Eight Immortals Gathering bears multiple hues on a single plant, a one-of-a-kind marvel. Dozens of introduced Japanese tree peonies feature distinctive colors and fragrances that compete in splendor. A single surviving Ming-dynasty white tree peony grows here, over three meters tall with a crown spanning 3 meters. Its luxuriant branches bear more than 400 blooms annually, earning it the title "King of Peonies" among visitors.
Benefiting from unique local climatic conditions, its tree peonies bloom earlier and fade later than those elsewhere. Once the tree peony blossoms fade, herbaceous peonies come into full bloom in succession. The garden gathers more than 300 premium ornamental herbaceous peony varieties from home and abroad, covering all eight color palettes. Standout cultivars include Yangfei Bathing, Xuefeng, Hongyan Shuangshuang, Zifeng Chaoyang, Wulong Tanhai, Xishi Pink, Orchid Champion, Wuhua Longyu, Golden Thread, and Golden Wheel. Their color, fragrance and shape rival tree peonies, making them elite floral treasures. Seedlings and fresh cut herbaceous peonies from this garden are highly sought-after across China, Europe and America.
