The Lushan Giant Buddha is located in Shangtang Town, a famous hot spring resort in Lushan County. Construction started in 2002 and was largely finished in 2005. However, the opening was delayed due to the SARS epidemic. It was scheduled for consecration in 2008. The original worship altar has been demolished and reconstructed, and the site has not yet been officially opened to the public.
The standing Buddha itself is 108 metres tall. The lotus throne is 20 metres high, the diamond throne 25 metres, and the Sumeru base 15 metres, bringing the total height to 168 metres.
The diamond throne has three storeys. Each floor contains nine exhibition halls and three worship platforms covering 300 square metres apiece, creating an unprecedented grand scene.
The upper outer wall is decorated with flying apsaras, the middle section features tens of thousands of Buddha niches, and three giant main gates face due south on the lower level.
Beneath it lies the Sumeru base covering 6,680 square metres.
The whole statue cost 280 million RMB. It was cast from 2,700 tons of brass and red copper plus 100 kilograms of gold. A steel framework of 3,700 tons was built inside for earthquake, wind and disaster resistance.
With a solemn yet elegant shape and imposing demeanour, it is hailed as "the No.1 Buddha under heaven".
In the early 1980s, the movie Mysterious Giant Buddha made the 71-metre Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan world-famous. The title of "the world’s largest Buddha" turned it into one of China’s most popular religious tourist sites.
But Leshan lost this title in 1997 to the 101.5-metre Lingshan Giant Buddha in Wuxi. Then in 2002, the 153-metre bronze Golden Buddha Mountain Statue was basically completed in Lushan County under the administration of Pingdingshan City, Henan Province.
