Shiren Mountain Scenic Area
Shiren Mountain Scenic Area is located in western Lushan County, Pingdingshan City, Henan Province, on the eastern section of the Funiu Mountains.
Originally named Yaoshan Mountain, it got its name because Liu Lei, a descendant of Emperor Yao, built an ancestral shrine here to worship his ancestor. This place is regarded as the birthplace of the Liu clan.
The main peak, Yuhuangding (Toad Stone), rises to an altitude of 2,153.1 metres.
The mountain features exotic peaks, numerous waterfalls, dense forests, high-quality hot springs and splendid cultural relics. It embodies grandeur, peril, grace, wonder and seclusion all in one landscape.
The scenic zone is divided into ten parts: Dongling Pool, Shifei Yuzhang, Sanchakou, White Dragon Pool, Banxianju, Stone Man, Cockscomb Rock, White Bull City, Secret Cave and Hot Spring Resort.
Experts comment that it combines the precipices of Huashan Mountain, the steepness of Emei Mountain, the beauty of Zhangjiajie and the elegance of Huangshan Mountain. It is an ideal destination for sightseeing, summer retreats, convalescence, scientific research and adventure.
In the Warring States Period, Mozi, the great thinker and social activist, was born at the foot of Yaoshan Mountain, where the former hometown ruins of Mozi are preserved to this day.
Steep cliffs stand towering, oddly shaped peaks look like carefully carved sculptures, and grotesque rocks scatter everywhere — these are the hallmark natural features of Shiren Mountain.
Standing atop Yuhuangding Peak, you overlook countless ridges and valleys. The rolling mountain shapes resemble flying dragons and phoenixes, and the ever-changing scenery forms endless picturesque scenes.
Mu Qing, former President of Xinhua News Agency, climbed Shiren Mountain twice. Captivated by its beauty, he left an inscription: "The Unrivaled Beauty of the Central Plains".
Shiren Mountain was also known as Yaoshan and Dalong Mountain in ancient times. It was where Liu Lei, descendant of Emperor Yao, built a shrine in memory of his ancestor, making it the ancestral home for all people surnamed Liu.
Later generations named it Shiren Mountain (Stone Man Mountain), because many stone peaks on the mountain closely resemble human figures.
The complete landscape system includes exotic peaks, wild blossoms, red autumn leaves, cascading waterfalls, hot springs, lakes, sea of clouds, primeval forests, rare wildlife and cultural sites.
More than 240 scenic spots have been officially named, including 17 waterfalls ranging from 60 to 200 metres high and over 40 tall stone pillars.
Famous attractions spread across the whole area: Stone Man Peak, General Peak, Thousand-Zhang Cliff, Harmony Peak, White Bull City Gate, Queen Mother’s Sedan Chair, Heavenly River, Nine-Turn Waterfall, Ghost Pass, Southern Heavenly Gate, Cockcrow Peak and Monkey Worshipping Guanyin.
Lying on the climatic boundary between the subtropical zone and the warm temperate zone, Shiren Mountain boasts extraordinarily rich flora and fauna.
The mountain presents distinct views with each passing season.
In spring, birds sing amid flowers, and green trees reflect murmuring brooks.
In late spring, you can witness the poetic scene: "Flowers fade away in the plain in April, yet peach blossoms bloom on mountain temple slopes."
When the temperature on the plains soars to 35–38℃ in midsummer, the mountain remains a comfortable 23–26℃.
Autumn paints the whole mountain crimson, with walnuts, kiwis, persimmons, mountain pears and wild grapes hanging heavy on the branches.
When winter snow falls, the mountain is blanketed in white. Forty-eight stone generals are clad in snow robes, while icicles hang from pines and bamboo.
Every season brings unique and enchanting scenery.
The most charming sights are mountain springs, brooks, waterfalls and deep pools.
The mountain springs are lively and changeable, babbling and murmuring with endless vitality.
Hundreds of springs converge into clear streams, like forest sprites singing along with hikers and guiding their way forward.
When these streams plunge off precipices, they form countless waterfalls — some slender and elegant, others powerful and imposing, ranging from a few metres to dozens of metres in height.
Constant dripping hollows out stones, and flowing water gathers into deep pools. Black Dragon Pool, White Dragon Pool and Hundred-Zhang Pool are hidden deep in mountain valleys.
Among all waterfalls, White Dragon Pool Waterfall is the most spectacular. Water surges down from the summit like a white dragon descending from heaven. The roaring current echoes for miles. Mist and vapour rise above the waterfall, while fish dart freely in the pool below, appearing and disappearing among ripples.
Shiren Mountain is also a paradise for wild animals. More than twenty rare species live here freely, including leopards, golden eagles, giant salamanders, elks, antelopes, otters and river deer.
Every year, numerous tourists come and fall in love with its pure natural beauty. It is a living painting, a poem and a folk song, untouched by mortal turmoil.
Wang Anshi once wrote: "Flat and nearby places draw crowds of visitors; remote precipices attract only a few. Yet the most magnificent and extraordinary scenery in the world always lies in distant perilous terrain."
Shiren Mountain has thick forests and wild vines. Even rare exotic flowers remain undiscovered for centuries. Still, its thirty-six scenic spots and seventy-two attractions are all as beautiful as paintings, each accompanied by touching historical tales and magical myths.
Mountains form landscape scrolls, and rocks compose garden poems.
Shiren Mountain is made of granite. After tens of millions of years of natural weathering and erosion, joint fractures have shaped a spectacular granite peak forest with jagged ridges, towering stone peaks and sheer cliffs.
Nearly one hundred peaks rise above 2,000 metres. Viewed from afar, they tower above sea of clouds; up close, they resemble grand ancient palace towers from the Qin and Han dynasties.
The Thousand-Zhang Cliff is magnificent, Phoenix Terrace elegant, Sister Peaks unrestrained, and White Bull City solemn.
The iconic "Stone Man" peak soars into the sky overlooking all creation, demonstrating the incredible craftsmanship of nature.
Rocks are the mountain’s bones, and streams are its blood vessels. Together they create the breathtaking scenery of Shiren Mountain.
More than 240 named natural attractions include forty scattered peaks. The main peak Yuhuangding stands at 2,153 metres.
From the North Observation Deck, Yuhuangding emerges partially through mist like a lotus flower rising from water.
Stone Man Peak, Laojun Peak and Immortal Peak look like celestial beings descending from the west.
At Phoenix Terrace, the Golden Turtle rock gazes toward the sun and moon. Azure Dragon Ridge stretches upward like a soaring giant dragon.
Standing on the Toad Stone, you enjoy a panoramic view over all surrounding mountains.
Harmony Peak, Elephant Trunk Peak and Cockcrow Peak are endlessly fascinating.
