The relics lie at Puzhou Ferry in Yongji City, on the middle reaches of the Yellow River. Local residents on both river banks mainly crossed the river by pontoon bridge. Yet the raging current kept washing the bridges away, bringing great inconvenience to travel.

To facilitate transportation and trade across the Yellow River, people rebuilt the pontoon bridge in the Tang Dynasty and cast these giant iron oxen as guardian deities to protect the bridge. They were placed on the river beach outside the west gate of ancient Puzhou City.

There were originally eight iron oxen in total, four of which have been unearthed. Each ox is more than three metres long and weighs approximately one tonne, all lined up facing the Yellow River. Iron mountains, iron pillars and iron human figures were also excavated alongside them, with lifelike and vivid shapes.
