Basic Definition
A mud volcano is a landform formed when underground pressurized mud, slurry, groundwater, gas (mainly methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide) seep upward through rock fractures and erupt onto the Earth’s surface. Unlike ordinary magmatic volcanoes powered by high-temperature magma, mud volcanoes discharge cold or low-temperature muddy sediment mixed with gases, with almost no magmatic activity.
Formation Mechanism
Tectonic compression, active fault zones and sedimentary basins are the primary formation conditions. Thick layers of soft mudstone and clay deep underground are squeezed by crustal movement. Enclosed gas accumulates and builds strong pressure, pushing liquefied mud to burst through weak strata. The erupted mud gradually piles up into cone-shaped mounds, flat mud pools or muddy domes, varying in size from small pits less than one metre tall to giant structures hundreds of metres high.
Distribution & Typical Features
Mud volcanoes mostly distribute along tectonic belts, subduction zones and petroleum-bearing sedimentary areas. They exist on land as well as on seabeds (submarine mud volcanoes).
Eruption products: cold mud, brackish water, inflammable natural gas, salt crystals and trace minerals;
Phenomenon: continuous gentle bubbling, intermittent mud ejection, slow mud flow; some gas outlets can sustain stable flames when ignited.

Geological research: Mud volcanoes are natural windows to observe deep subsurface materials, helping scientists study crustal stress, underground fluid movement and petroleum resource distribution.
Geochemical significance: The released gases are important components of global carbon cycling.
Tourism value: Unique muddy landscapes, bubbling mud pools and burning gas vents are special geo-tourism resources. Famous mud volcano scenic spots are located in Azerbaijan, Taiwan of China, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, Indonesia and Romania.
