Basic Overview
Officially named Kurkara Wusu Grand Canyon, it is also widely known as the Wusu section of Anjihai Grand Canyon, situated in Xidagou Town, Usu City, Tacheng Prefecture, northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It lies roughly 70 km southeast of downtown Usu City and 15 km away from National Highway 312, with convenient self-driving access. This grand landform was selected as an important shooting location for the hit Chinese movie Pegasus 2 (Feichi Rensheng 2).
Geological Formation & Geometric Parameters
Carved over millions of years by glacial meltwater and seasonal floods of the Bayingou River originating from glaciers (5,250 m above sea level) on the Yilianhabirga Mountain in the middle North Tianshan Range, the canyon runs along a north-south trend抖音百科.
Total length: 26–30 km
Valley shoulder width: 800–1,000 m; valley bottom width: 100–400 m
Vertical drop: maximum depth reaches nearly 400 meters
The near-vertical cliff walls are sculpted into jagged stone forests by long-term rain erosion and water scouring. Distinct sedimentary rock layers display rich gradient colours of crimson, iron red, dark grey, ochre and teal green, forming a stunning colourful geological gallery recorded by rock strata. A typical braided river system meanders across the gravel riverbed at the bottom, creating fluid branching water patterns that deliver striking aerial visual effects.
Core Landscape Features
Colour Stratified Cliffs
Differentiated mineral compositions endow each rock stratum with unique tones. Sunrise and sunset cast slanting golden light onto folded cliff surfaces, strengthening the three-dimensional texture of the canyon.
Braided River Valley Landform
Silt-laden river branches spread freely on the flat riverbed, weaving natural abstract patterns against the rugged canyon framework, regarded as a top spot for drone aerial photography.
Contrasting Zonal Scenery
The upper canyon is covered with alpine meadows and sparse vegetation backed by permanent snow-capped Tianshan peaks, while the lower gorge presents rough, desolate rift landforms. The soft pastoral view and wild crack landform form a sharp visual contrast.
Primitive Wild State
Different from the commercialized adjacent Dushanzi Grand Canyon, Wusu Grand Canyon keeps its original wilderness without paid tickets or artificial amusement facilities. Free roadside viewing platforms are available for tourists to overlook the whole canyon landscape.
Travel Guide Information
Best Visiting Period
May to October (peak season): Stable weather, clear visibility, ideal for photography and outdoor sightseeing
Golden hours: 1 hour after sunrise & 2 hours before sunset for optimal light conditions
Transportation Mode
Self-driving is the most recommended way; 2-wheel drive vehicles are accessible to main viewing platforms, while 4WD cars are better for in-depth valley exploration.
Practical Tips
Wear windproof outerwear, sun cream and anti-dust masks; the canyon area is windy all year round
Do not walk close to cliff edges for safety; loose gravel may trigger rock falls
No formal service facilities inside the canyon; prepare drinking water and snacks in advance
Preserve the primitive ecology; do not carve rock faces or damage natural formations
Cultural & Tourism Value
As a representative typical fluvial erosion canyon in northern Tianshan, Wusu Grand Canyon integrates geological research value, wild aesthetic value and film & television landscape value. It has gradually become a classic stop for Xinjiang northern route self-driving tours, geological study trips and landscape photography tours.
