Mount Penglai, also known as Mount Nine Immortals, is situated in Banmian Township of Youxi County. It is 35 kilometres from the county seat and stands at an elevation of 1,288 metres. The flat summit covers more than 2,000 square metres, making it one of the highest peaks in Youxi. Winding stone railings chiselled along the rock twist around the mountain ridges. A statue of Guanyin was erected atop the peak during the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty (627–649).

Mount Penglai was not only the earliest developed scenic spot and religious sanctuary before Youxi was officially established as a county, but also one of the most beautiful natural tourist attractions in Sanming City. The area boasts extraordinary mountain ranges, imposing ridges, towering peaks and jagged rock formations. Gurgling springs and plunging waterfalls are nature’s masterpieces. Lush forests, tall bamboo groves, ancient towering trees and rare flowers form a picturesque landscape of clear mountains and bright waters.

Scenic spots on the mountain include Golden Crucian Carp Pond, Stone Go Board, Black-and-White Chess Stones, Alchemy Stove and White Crane Cave. Deep caves, towering rocky valleys, precipitous gorges and murmuring mountain springs are dotted among green pines and cypresses, creating a delightful natural vista.

According to legend, immortals once roamed the summit, and the sound of ritual music could be heard from time to time. Youxi County Records preserves an ancient poem: Soft breezes lift the mist and clouds apart, Sunlight falls on the incense altar on the peak. I do not come to bow before gods and spirits, But only to enjoy the scenery on Penglai.

The mountain remains cool in midsummer and mild in bitter winter, with an average temperature of 18°C and crisp weather all year round. The sunrise and sunset views are particularly spectacular. Visitors are always reluctant to leave its serene and magnificent scenery. A winding mountain highway leads directly to the site.
