Liuyang Reservoir

Liuyang Reservoir is situated on the upper reaches of the Futai River, a tributary of the Huifa River, in Liuyang Village of Futai Town. It lies on the tourist route linking downtown Panshi, Guanma Karst Cave and Lianhuashan Forest Park. Primarily designed for flood control and irrigation, it ranks among the four major medium-sized reservoirs in Panshi City.

Since its initial construction in 1956, the reservoir has undergone several expansions. At present, the dam is 13.2 metres high and 800 metres long, making it the longest dam in Panshi City. It has a total storage capacity of 19.1 million cubic metres, and the catchment area controlled by the dam site covers 92.5 square kilometres.

Boasting a pleasant and picturesque environment, Liuyang Reservoir is surrounded by luxuriant ornamental forests that shelter more than 40 species of birds and over 10 other kinds of wild animals. The upper watershed retains intact vegetation free from industrial pollution, so the reservoir water meets Grade A water quality standards. Fish grow rapidly here and taste extremely delicious. The big-pot stewed fish is the signature dish of the reservoir. Fish dishes served with fresh wild mountain vegetables attract large numbers of tourists.

Tourism development at Liuyang Reservoir started in 1993 with increasing investment year by year. By 2003, the total investment had exceeded 2 million yuan. Available facilities include a guest house, a dining hall, a dance hall, private dining rooms, a swimming pool, more than ten pleasure boats, two pavilions, several sets of stone tables, two sports courts, a billiards hall, a table tennis room and electronic shooting games. The accommodation and catering facilities can host 100 overnight guests and seat 200 diners at the same time, bringing an annual economic benefit of approximately 500,000 yuan.
