Huanghe Reservoir Scenic Area

Huanghe Reservoir Scenic Area is 33 kilometres away from downtown Panshi. Located on the upper reaches of the Yinma River, it stretches across Yantongshan Town and Mingcheng Town. It is a comprehensive water conservancy project focusing on irrigation, supplemented by power generation and diversified businesses. It is the largest medium-sized reservoir in Panshi City.

Construction began in August 1958. The reservoir was built by damming the waters of the Xiao Huanghe River. The widest part of the water surface reaches 1.5 kilometres, and the total length is about 5.5 kilometres. Its catchment area covers 784 square kilometres. The dam is 13 metres high and 520 metres long, with a total storage capacity of 35 million cubic metres.

Famous across the province for leisure, fishery and sightseeing, Huanghe Reservoir boasts clear and expansive waters. It has formed an integrated scenic system combining engineering views, water landscapes, cultural sites and mountain forest scenery. The reservoir features mountains, water and peninsulas. The water body winds in an S shape. The peninsulas teem with wild flora and fauna, where flocks of wild ducks and grey cranes can be seen everywhere.

The tourist zone enjoys exceptional natural resources. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and adjacent to the town on the fourth, it is traversed by National Highway 202 to the west and backed by the lofty Shuangding Mountain to the north. In early spring, apricot blossoms bloom pink amid fresh green shoots; ice thaws, fish dart in the rippling water. In summer, mountains are covered in lush green, mountains and rivers mirror each other amid birdsong. In autumn, the hills glow with colourful foliage and the water remains as clear as a mirror. In winter, snowflakes fill the sky, wrapping the whole area in a blanket of white.

The air here is fresh and the environment pleasant. The aquatic resources are extremely abundant with a great variety of fish, including sea bass, mandarin fish, common carp, silver carp, catfish, crucian carp, silver bighead, black carp and other wild fish. Local specialties include river crabs, freshwater mussels and river snails.

Along the winding waterfront stands a waterside viewing corridor also used for angling. Other attractions include the rock-protected dam, Tide Viewing Pavilion, European-style hydropower station, grand water delivery sluice tower, leisure woodlands, forest pavilions, fountains and lotus ponds. There are also Russian-style villa campsites and windmill rockeries.

In 2002, the scenic area was rated a Grade 2A Tourist Attraction by the Jilin Provincial Tourism Administration. In 2003, it was included in the provincial special tourist routes, designated as a branch scenic zone of Guanma Lianhuashan National Forest Park by the State Forestry Administration, and awarded the title of National Water Conservancy Scenic Area by the Ministry of Water Resources.

In 2006, Huanghe Hotel was newly built in accordance with three-star standards. It can accommodate 260 overnight guests and seat 500 diners simultaneously. Equipped with complete facilities and offering warm high-quality service, the hotel receives more than 100,000 tourists every year.
