Genghis Khan Cultural Park

The planning and design of Genghis Khan Cultural Park follows the life of the great conqueror Genghis Khan, inheriting the historical culture of the Mongolian nation and integrating regional landscapes, diverse architectural styles and multiple civilizations. Boasting an ecological layout of three rivers and seven lakes interwoven with mountains and waters, the park has grown into a distinctive water town beyond the Great Wall with strong ethnic charm.

The park is bounded by Guoluros Road to the south, the Songhua River to the north, Hada Avenue to the west and the Second Main Canal to the east. The overall planned controlled area covers 50 square kilometres, including a 10-square-kilometre core zone and a 4-square-kilometre initial development zone.

As the landmark opening project of the new Guoluros City, the cultural park was completed within four months. It occupies a total land area of 999 mu, with 239,000 square metres of green space and 99,000 square metres of wetland. The construction projects include afforestation, wetland restoration, landscaping and supporting infrastructure.

Magnificent, spacious, naturally ecological and rich in ethnic customs, Genghis Khan Cultural Park is a scenic spot dedicated to the history of the Mongol-Yuan Dynasty and Mongolian art. Different from classical southern Chinese gardens, the park features minimal artificial decoration and delicate implicit layouts. It fully reproduces Mongolian history and culture through sculptures, stone steles and other architectural works, embodying the bold, open and unrestrained primitive temperament of the grassland people. The whole park is shaped like a key, which expresses the good wish of the Guoluros people to carry forward the spirit of the sage leader and unlock a prosperous future.

The Genghis Khan Stone stands 3.69 metres high and weighs 239 tons. It bears a V-shaped grain on the front side, a symbol of victory and success, hence its name the Stone of Success, or Chengshi for short.

Subtle patterns emerge on the stone surface: wolf heads, deer heads, galloping horses, eagles, jade hares, morin khuur, the Songhua and Nenjiang rivers, as well as auspicious khata scarves. All these are totems cherished by the Mongolian people.

This bronze statue depicts neither a warrior riding horseback with bow and whip, nor an emperor sitting facing the south. Standing tall on the sacred mountain and gazing into the distance, the great leader points southward with his left hand and holds a scroll in his right hand, showing the extraordinary bearing of a great statesman, thinker, strategist and diplomat.

The foundation-laying ceremony for the statue was held on May 22, 2011. On that day, auspicious east winds blew in, auspicious clouds gathered, and timely rain fell to purify the earth. Soon the clouds lifted and sunlight spread everywhere. Haloes appeared around the sun, a rainbow arched in the southeast sky, and eagles soared above the park. Witnesses regarded all these as miraculous omens.

This standing bronze statue is the tallest of Genghis Khan in the world. It is 22 metres high (66 chi) and weighs 666 tons, symbolizing his 22 years of reign and his lifespan of 66 years. In 1206, Temujin, the hero who unified the Mongolian Plateau, was proclaimed Genghis Khan at the Kurultai Assembly by the Onon River. The giant statue portrays him at the age of 44, when he rose to become ruler of a world empire. The whole park recreates the grand coronation ceremony of the Mongol Emperor.

Genghis Khan Cultural Park serves as an important sacred site for Guoluros people to offer sacrifices to Genghis Khan, and it is also the largest cultural theme park dedicated to Genghis Khan across China.
