Anxi Confucian Temple was first built in the fourth year of the Xianping reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (1001) and is designated as a Provincial-level Cultural Relic Protection Unit. Its current layout took shape after reconstruction during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty.

The main buildings are arranged symmetrically along a north-south central axis. From the outer entrance inward stand the Pan Palace, the stone archway "Tengjiao Qifeng", the Pan Pond, the screen wall, the Lingxing Gate, the Halberd Gate, side corridors, the Dacheng Hall, the Chongsheng Hall and the Education Administration Office. The compound stretches 164 metres from north to south and 36.5 metres from east to west. Together with the Minglun Hall, the total construction area reaches 5,986 square metres.

The architectural complex features a well-organized layout with distinct layers, magnificent scale and exquisite craftsmanship. It has long enjoyed the reputation as the most elegant Confucian temple south of the Yangtze River and the foremost one in Fujian Province. Its architectural techniques were introduced to Japan, serving as important evidence of cultural and scientific exchanges between China and Japan.
