Qingquan Rock Scenic Area
The scenic area sits halfway up the northern foothills of Liangshan Mountain in the Xialou Production Zone of Dananban Town, alongside National Highway 324, six kilometers from the county seat. A cement road linking the national highway to the attraction is fully accessible.
Qingquan Rock Temple was first built in the Song Dynasty. Monks constructed the temple by making use of a massive natural stone shelter. During the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Wu, a successful imperial scholar from Zhangpu and Judicial Commissioner of Guangdong, reconstructed the temple after his retirement to enshrine the Three Jewels Buddhas. The temple features elaborately carved beams and painted rafters, resplendent and magnificent. Chants of Buddha echo softly, while bells and drums resound at dusk. Pilgrims stream here endlessly, and incense offerings have flourished through all dynasties.
Perched halfway up Liangshan Mountain amid superior natural scenery, the temple takes its name from the crystal-clear spring water running through it. A more than 400-year-old ancient longan tree stands lush and sturdy in front of the temple. Literati and scholars of past dynasties left numerous exquisite poems and inscriptions here. Over ten ancient cliff stone carvings dot the mountain. Among them, the characters "Qingquan Cave" were handwritten by Cai Xin. The carved inscription of the Heart Sutra was chiseled by Taoist Master Zhishan in the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. Its peculiar calligraphy carries an imposing momentum, resembling a divine talisman from heaven, and is hailed as an unparalleled wonder of Southern Fujian. The stone carving "Awakening Shore" is an engraved replica of an imperial handwriting from the Qianlong reign.
A stone known as the "Unfailing Spring Rock" before the temple has remained an unsolved millennium-old mystery. Behind the temple lies the Spring Listening Cave, where the gurgling spring creates delightful sounds. A natural waterfall plunges down the hundred-zhang cliff on the rear mountain, presenting a spectacular sight. There is another natural stone shelter on the back mountain that can hold a hundred people inside. With trickling springs and rugged, precipitous terrain, it once served as a secret assembly spot for guerrilla fighters of the 3rd Red Regiment, hence its name "Red Army Cave".
Two kilometers downhill stands Yongqing Fortress, the former residence of Cai Xin. It is an earthen fortress designed for defense, with its outer walls and overall outline still intact to this day.
Boasting profound historical and cultural heritage as well as enchanting mountain and river landscapes, Qingquan Rock is poised to be developed into a tourist destination for sightseeing, pilgrimage and leisure excursions. The planned development area of the scenic zone covers 3,000 mu, with an estimated total investment of 80 million RMB.
