Basic Overview
Sayhenbulak, also known as West Valley, derives its Kazakh name meaning "valley with murmuring brooks". Located roughly 110 km north of Fuyun County in Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, it is the original prototype of Rainbow Bulak depicted in Li Juan’s prose My Altay, a primitive alpine summer pasture rarely crowded with tourists. Backed by snow-capped Altai Mountains, this hidden paradise features virgin spruce forests, winding glacial streams, sprawling wildflower meadows, granite stone forests and authentic Kazakh nomadic culture, free from over-commercial development.
Best travel period: June to early September; cool weather, flourishing grassland and frequent rainbows after showers.
Travel mode: Self-driving or chartered off-road vehicle is the only feasible way for in-depth touring.

Day 1: Fuyun County → Sayhenbulak Valley Core Area • Forest & Stream Sightseeing
Morning: Depart from Fuyun County along National Highway G331. Check in for border registration at the valley entrance. Drive along the primitive dirt road deep into the canyon, admire layered snow peaks standing behind dense Siberian spruce forests.
Noon: Have authentic Kazakh meals in local yurts, try hand-made milk tea, roasted mutton and naan bread.
Afternoon: Hike along the brook trail. Wander by crystal-clear mountain streams, photograph wild yellow flowers covering the meadow, explore scattered granite stone landforms with weird shapes.
Evening: Settle in Kazakh yurts inside the pasture. Watch the sunset gild mountain ridges, listen to the sound of running water and pastoral cattle bells. Overnight in local nomad yurts.
Day 2: In-depth Pasture Exploration • Nomadic Culture & Outdoor Experience
Early morning: Get up for alpine sunrise; watch flocks of sheep and herds of cattle march slowly across the grassland with herdsmen. Capture the classic nomadic transhumance scene.
Daytime: Join local experiences: horse riding across the meadow, watching Kazakh folk songs and ballad performances (Aken singing). Drive to the G331 Highway 8888km milestone for a symbolic road check-in. Choose wild camping beside the brook with proper equipment if you prefer outdoor camping.
Afternoon: Trek into the inner forest area, breathe fresh phytoncide-rich air in the primeval woods, look for small wild animals in the quiet valley.
Night: Appreciate the bright starry sky and thick Milky Way with zero light pollution in the remote mountain valley.
Day 3: Valley Outer Loop • Panoramic Landscape → Return to Fuyun / Koktokay
Morning: Drive the outer loop route of Sayhenbulak to overlook the whole valley from high viewpoints. Panoramic views of snow mountains, forests, rivers and yurt clusters form a complete natural scroll painting.
Midday: Taste homemade dairy products (kurut, cream) as souvenirs at nomad families.
Afternoon: Head back. Two optional return routes:
Directly return to Fuyun County for trip conclusion;
Drive toward Koktokay Geopark to connect with the classic Altay scenic route.
Core Travel Tips
Documents: Prepare ID cards and complete border formalities at the valley checkpoint.
Accommodation: Indoor heating is available in yurts; bring thick windproof coats, as mountain temperature drops sharply at night even in summer.
Supplies: No large supermarkets in the pasture; stock up on drinking water, snacks and common medicines in Fuyun County in advance.
Etiquette: Ask for permission before photographing local Kazakh residents; keep the grassland clean and take all garbage away.
Road condition: Inner valley roads are rugged dirt roads; vehicles with off-road performance are strongly recommended.
