Basic Overview
Shenzhong Mountain, also officially named Amir Sala Peak, is the core landmark of the Irtysh Grand Canyon in the Koktokay World Geopark (5A-level scenic area), Fuyun County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. Honored as the finest mountain scenery of the Altai Mountains, this huge monolithic granite peak rises abruptly beside the Irtysh River, shaped exactly like a giant inverted bronze bell, hence the name “Shenzhong (Magic Bell) Mountain”新疆阿勒泰....
Altitude above sea level: 1,608 m
Vertical relative height: 365 m (symbolizing peace and good fortune for all 365 days a year)
Average slope of the cliff: nearly 89°, featuring smooth rounded outer surfaces and precipitous vertical rock walls
Geological Formation
The mountain mass belongs to Yanshanian porphyritic biotite granite formed over hundreds of millions of years. Concentric layered joints are widely distributed inside the rock body. After long-term frost weathering, water erosion and gravitational collapse, the granite gradually peeled off layer by layer, finally forming the unique bell-shaped landform we see today. Tiny cracks on the rock face nurture birch trees, pine trees and Siberian spruce, creating a striking contrast between hard bare stone and vibrant green vegetation携程.
Surrounding Landscape
The emerald Irtysh River — China’s only river flowing westward into the Arctic Ocean — winds gently at the foot of Shenzhong Mountain, forming a spectacular canyon landscape integrating steep cliffs, clear glacial meltwater rivers and primeval forests.
Four distinctive natural forms can be observed from different viewing angles: a giant bell, an elephant, a whale and a divine dragon. After rain, mist shrouds the peak and rainbows often span the canyon, presenting an ethereal fairyland view新疆阿勒泰....
Cultural & Folk Legend
The alias Amir Sala Peak originates from a touching Kazakh ancient love legend. Two young men Amir and Hotaiji both fell in love with the girl Sala. After a series of tragic encounters, the lovers sacrificed themselves beside the mountain. Local residents regard the bell-shaped peak as a symbol of loyal love and spiritual protection. Tourists have long kept the custom: visiting Bell Mountain brings lifelong peace.
