Mengyue Longjiang Scenic Area
Mengyue Township Overview
Mengyue Township is located in the southeast of Longchuan County, with an altitude ranging from 780 meters to 1,350 meters. Bordered by the Longjiang River, it adjoins Luxi City to the east. The township covers a total land area of 200 square kilometers and lies 35 kilometers away from Zhangfeng, the county seat.
A Guangwa Cultural Station was established here in 1956. It was renamed Qingjiuda People’s Commune in 1959, and then Guangwa District in 1984. In the same year, the Guangpa and Guangwa Villagers’ Committees were transferred under the administration of Saihao District. The area was officially named Mengyue Township in 1988, with the township government relocated from Guangwa to Yingpan Village.
Currently, the township governs five villagers’ committees: Guangwa, Bangzhong, Yingpan, Bangwa and Wamu. Among them, Bangwa and Wamu Villagers’ Committees were incorporated into Mengyue Township in November 2002 after the former Bangwa Township was dissolved and merged. As of 2005, the township had 1,724 households with a total population of 7,437, including 1,592 Han people and 5,770 Jingpo people.
Longjiang River Valley Development Zone
The Longjiang River Valley Development Zone is one of Yunnan Province’s 11 poverty alleviation projects featuring off-site relocation and development.
The Longchuan section on the west bank of the Longjiang River boasts 70,000 mu of land suitable for sugarcane cultivation, covering 56 villagers’ groups and a population of 15,175.
Full-scale development of the valley kicked off in 1995. The zone successively resettled 346 households (1,480 people) relocated from Dongchuan District of Kunming City, plus another 407 households (1,000 people) relocated from within Longchuan County. A total of 23,000 mu of land was reclaimed for sugarcane planting.
Infrastructure within the development zone has been greatly upgraded. A complete road network covers the sugarcane-growing areas, with the riverside highway and Zhangzhe Highway fully open to traffic. Major tropical crops grown in the Longjiang River Valley include sugarcane, coffee, lemons and citrus fruits.
Address: Southeast of Longchuan County, 35 kilometers from Zhangfeng County Seat.
