Construction Background
On August 1, 2008, Weizixia Township was identified by NAOC as one of the best observation sites for China’s first total solar eclipse in the 21st century, drawing astronomers and photographers worldwide to witness this cosmic spectacle今日头条. The local government invested 4.5 million RMB to build this astronomical memorial complex to permanently record this astronomical event. Besides daytime solar observation, the clear sky and low light pollution here make it a premium stargazing base at night for astronomical activities and live broadcasts of space missions such as China Space Station transits哈密市人民.... An asteroid numbered 80801 was officially named Yiwu Star by the International Astronomical Union in commemoration of this place’s astronomical status携程.
Design Philosophy & Astronomical Principle
The design integrates traditional Chinese astronomical wisdom and world-famous ancient observatory forms:
Core inspiration originates from the Ten-Pole Shadow Measurement Method of the ancient Yi people’s October solar calendar, combined with China’s traditional gnomon and sundial technologies;
It borrows the layout feature of Stonehenge in Salisbury, UK, unifying scientific practicability, landscape aesthetics, artistic value and popular science interactivity.
The central core consists of nine stone pillars of varying heights and shapes erected on an oval platform engraved with time scales, grids, star charts and seasonal markers. Visitors can read the local true solar time, seasonal shifts and azimuth information directly via the shadow cast by pillars under sunlight. A directional calibration sign is installed at the northern end of the platform for accurate geographic orientation.
Core Attraction Complex
The whole scenic area is composed of multiple functional astronomical facilities:
Main Solar Calendar Platform: The core shadow-measuring observation zone for time & solar terms calculation;
Equatorial Sundial (Total Solar Eclipse Monument): The landmark sculpture recording the 2008 total solar eclipse, the most photographed icon of the square;
Human Sundial & Zodiac Zone: Interactive experience areas for tourists to perceive solar projection with human bodies;
Planetarium & Astronomical Exhibition Hall: Equipped with dome cinemas and professional astronomical telescopes, displaying stellar evolution, constellation knowledge and local astronomical observation archives; high-precision telescopes can automatically track more than 40,000 celestial bodies for public astronomical viewing.

Short Version (for plaque / brochure abstract, ~100 words)
Brief Intro of Yiwu Solar Calendar Square
Located in Weizixia Township, Yiwu County, this national 3A scenic spot was built to memorize the 2008 total solar eclipse, China’s first total solar eclipse observation event in the 21st century. Designed by China’s National Astronomical Observatories, it blends the Yi nationality’s ancient shadow-measuring calendar and Stonehenge layout. Relying on nine carved stone pillars and an equatorial sundial, visitors can measure real solar time and seasonal changes through sunlight shadows. Equipped with a planetarium and exhibition halls, it serves as a professional astronomical popular science base and a well-known stargazing resort in eastern Xinjiang.
