 Basic Overview
Nalenggel Grassland is a high-altitude valley grassland situated in the western part of Yiwu County, Hami City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, lying at the eastern end of Barkol Grassland within the East Tianshan Mountains. Covering a total area of 1.76 million mu, it sits at an average elevation of 2,150 meters, stretching east to Hanqiugou, south to Tianshan Temple, west to the military horse farm bordering Barkol Grassland, and north to Yanchi Town of Yiwu County. Nestled in the Yiwu River valley enclosed by two mountain ranges, it earns its Mongolian name “Nalenggel”, which literally translates to “a narrow mountain valley”.
Natural Landscape & Ecological Environment
Surrounded by rolling mountains, the grassland boasts a layered vertical landscape system. Distant snow-capped peaks are veiled in floating clouds; dense pine forests blanket mountain slopes with roaring pine winds and lush green foliage. The valley floor features luxuriant pasture dotted with wild blossoms, singing birds, clear brooks winding through gullies and jagged strange rocks, retaining primitive and tranquil wilderness charm.
The grassland integrates wetlands, alpine meadows and the famous Hami Mingsha Mountain (singing sand dunes). White swans, egrets and various waterfowl inhabit the wetland waters, forming a distinctive coexistence of desert dunes, lakes and green grasslands rarely seen in northwest China天山网. Benefiting from high altitude and mountain barrier effects, the area maintains cool temperatures in summer, making it a premium summer resort to escape the intense heat of the Gobi desert.
Humanity & Folk Customs
It has been a core pastoral base for local Kazakh nomads for centuries. Traditional nomadic culture is well preserved here, with classic folk activities including horse racing, sheep snatching, girl-chasing games, Kazakh wrestling and Aken’s ballad singing staged regularly, showcasing vivid nomadic vitality and ethnic customs.
Besides natural scenery, the grassland holds mysterious cultural relics: dozens of stone circles of unknown origin and naturally formed balanced huge granite boulders scattered across the mountains, leaving countless unsolved geological and cultural riddles for visitors to explore.
Tourism Value
Free to open to tourists, Nalenggel Grassland is known as the “sky pasture” under East Tianshan Mountains. Popular activities include horse riding, grassland picnics, sunset viewing and star photography. Far from urban light pollution, its night sky presents brilliant stellar scenery. Combining snow mountains, forests, wetlands, singing dunes and ethnic customs, it is a representative niche scenic spot along the Xinjiang Silk Road tourism route.
