 Basic Overview
Red Stone Valley is tucked 17 kilometres northwest of Qianshan Kazakh Township, Yiwu County, Hami City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, nestled in the branch range of the Moqin Wula Mountains of the Tianshan Mountains, stretching roughly 20 kilometres in both length and width with an average altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level. It belongs to a granite canyon combining wind erosion landform and yardan landscape. The ruddy tone of massive boulders originates from red lichens clinging to rock surfaces; lichens secrete acidic substances that weather and corrode bedrocks over tens of thousands of years, forming grotesque red stone clusters scattered across valleys and Nenlegel Grassland, hence the name “Red Stone Valley”. Free of admission fees and commercial tourism development, it retains primitive plateau wilderness and genuine Kazakh nomadic customs.

Scenic Features after Snowfall
Snow drapes the jagged red rock formations with a pure white mantle, creating a stunning visual contrast between fiery reddish-brown rocks and immaculate snow blankets. Layered snow accumulates in rock crevices, gullies and gentle slopes, softening the bold, angular outlines of wind-carved stones shaped like eagles spreading wings, toads and traditional Chinese opera masks.
Patches of withered grass and sparse alpine vegetation poke through the snow, dotting the pale snowfield with faint green and tawny hues. Distant rolling Tianshan ridges are capped with lingering snow, matched with clear azure sky and sparse drifting clouds. The quiet snow valley eliminates hustle and bustle; only the traces of wild animals and occasional herds of Kazakh livestock break the tranquil snowy wilderness, presenting a solemn, elegant and primitive northern Xinjiang alpine snow landscape favoured by landscape photographers.
Geology & Human Context
Millions of years of crustal movement, strong wind abrasion and freeze-thaw weathering have sculpted the diversified stone shapes here. Local Kazakh herdsmen graze livestock around the valley all year round, preserving traditional pastoral lifestyles, adding warm human touches to the frigid snowy red stone landscape携程.
Travel Tips
Best visiting period: Late autumn to early spring after snowfalls; April snow scenery is the most representative photographic theme.
Transport: Self-driving 4WD vehicles are required; rugged mountain dirt roads turn slippery after snow with no public transport available.
Preparation: Temperatures drop sharply in snowy days; windproof cold-proof outfits, anti-slip shoes and professional photographic equipment are necessary.
Etiquette: Keep a safe distance from grazing herds and respect local Kazakh folk traditions.
Core Value
Snow-covered Red Stone Valley integrates red stone geomorphology, plateau snow scenery and grassland nomadic culture. Far less crowded than mainstream scenic spots, it is a premium destination for wild landscape shooting, geological sightseeing and in-depth primitive Xinjiang outdoor exploration.
