Two-Dragon Mountain Scenic Area is among China’s first batch of AAAA-level tourist zones. It lies 50 kilometres east of Harbin, on the outskirts of the ancient city of Binzhou. The Tongjiang-Sanya Expressway and National Highway G221 run alongside the resort, offering highly convenient transportation.
The scenic area covers a total area of 40 square kilometres, including 10 square kilometres of water surface, 15 square kilometres of forested land, and another 15 square kilometres allocated for tourist facilities, commercial services and public utilities. The Two-Dragon Mountain Reservoir started construction in 1958 and was completed in 1974, with a total storage capacity of 99 million cubic metres. It is a medium-sized reservoir integrating tourism, fishery production, urban water supply, flood control, irrigation and other functions. Every year, the resort receives 1.5 million visitors from home and abroad, with total tourism revenue exceeding 300 million yuan and tax contribution reaching 20 million yuan.
Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the scenic area boasts a turquoise lake and the iconic "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl". It offers year-round tourism. There are ten famous views including Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl and the Long Dragon Lying on the Waves, as well as four spectacular wonders such as Rainbow over Treasure Island and Fish Leaping out of the Lake. Reputed as "the Back Garden of Heilongjiang Province", it is an ideal leisure and holiday destination. A number of state leaders including Deng Zahui visited Two-Dragon Mountain successively and delivered important instructions on local tourism development.
Up to now, nearly 1.1 billion yuan has been invested in construction. A great many elaborately designed tourist projects have been developed. Meanwhile, great efforts have been made to upgrade infrastructure and the ecological environment, continuously improving roads, water supply and drainage, power supply, telecommunications, afforestation and landscaping.
In 2003, Two-Dragon Mountain Scenic Area topped the online poll for Heilongjiang’s Best Tourist Attraction, and was also named one of Harbin’s Top Ten Favourite Scenic Spots among teenagers.
More than 40 participatory recreational activities are available for visitors. Ropeway, zip line, rock climbing, paragliding and various cruise ships are especially popular for their excitement.
Built in 1999, Two-Dragon Mountain Dragon Pearl Ski Resort ranks among the largest and best-equipped ski resorts across the province, and is one of the top SSS-level suburban ski resorts nationwide. It features 8 ski runs and two large beginner ski zones, capable of accommodating 2,000 skiers at the same time. Every winter, the resort is packed with tourists. It has hosted nearly 500,000 skiing visitors in total, and successfully held six sessions of the International Ski Festival, the 10th National Winter Games, FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup and other major events.
Wanfo Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Northeast China. The morning and evening bell chimes linger amid curling incense, presenting a peaceful and prosperous scene. The Pearl Island Movie Town combines sightseeing, entertainment and film shooting, making it a well-loved stop for tourists. Over ten films and TV dramas have been shot here, including Women’s Basketball Team No.5, Wolves March at Dawn, Bloodshed at Mandarin Duck Cup, Zhang Zuolin: King of Northeast China and No Horizon in the City. Many celebrities such as Hou Baolin, Li Moran, Miao Lijie, Lin Yilun and Feng Xiaogang once worked on location here.
The scenic area now has 6 star-rated hotels, 20 villas and holiday villages, plus 20 folk-style restaurants scattered among mountains and lakes, providing 5,000 beds to meet the demands of tourists at all consumption levels.
Two-Dragon Lake teems with freshwater fish. The icefish, known as "ginseng of the water", was first successfully bred here in Heilongjiang Province.
