Xiangshui River Thrilling Drift

Constructed in 2001, Xiangshui River Drift is situated on the Fanghu Highway connected to the Harbin-Tongjiang Expressway, 90 kilometres away from Fangzheng County.

The river course alternates between straight stretches and winding bends, shaded by green willows with gorgeous scenery on both banks. The drifting route extends 10 kilometres with a total drop of 25 metres. The water varies in depth: you will encounter torrential rapids and cascading falls, calm man-made canals, as well as breathtaking plastic-steel chutes.

The river winds through a primitive grand canyon flanked by towering cliffs and ancient towering trees. The picturesque landscape will make you forget all your worries and indulge in the charm of nature. Numerous oddly shaped rocks along the banks resemble roaring tigers, soaring goshawks, rhinoceroses and celestial hounds, stirring rich imagination among visitors. Historic sites including the dense barracks peaks, City Wall Cliff and Rain Shelter Cliff remind tourists of the heroic Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and inspire perseverance. The legendary Fox Fairy Cave transports visitors into a wonderful fairy tale world.

There are more than ten scenic spots along the whole drifting journey. Rain Shelter Cliff and Fox Fairy Cave stand out as the most attractive sites. Rain Shelter Cliff lies on the west side of the waterway. In 1937, eight female soldiers of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army led by Leng Yun got separated from their unit while breaking through the enemy blockade. They took shelter under this concave cliff. Pressed hard by enemy troops, they retreated to the Mudanjiang River and sacrificed themselves by jumping into the upper reaches of Sandiaotong Ferry. Later generations named this place Rain Shelter Cliff in memory of the eight heroines.

Fox Fairy Cave is located in the upper reach of the drifting river. According to local legend, a young hunter who was badly injured was miraculously rescued by a beautiful maiden. She brought him to a stone cave hanging halfway up the cliff to heal his wounds. As the two gradually fell in love, the maiden vanished without a trace. An elderly local told the young man that his saviour was a fox fairy. Since then, the cave has been named Fox Fairy Cave, full of lingering longing.

This drifting experience combines the grandeur of the Three Gorges, the magic of Zhangjiajie, the grace of the Li River and the tranquillity of West Lake. While floating along the meandering river, tourists can sing aloud, battle through rapids, or splash and play in the water to rediscover their true selves.
