Kangping Museum is located south of Shunshan Third Road and west of West Binhu Fourth Street in the New Town, right at the eastern starting point of the Great Liao Holy Market Commercial Street. It covers a land area of 10,000 square metres with a construction area of 6,619 square metres, making it the largest single museum building among all county-level museums in Liaoning Province. The main building cost 41 million yuan. It has two above-ground storeys with partial three-storey sections.

The architectural shape draws its layout from the Eight Khitan Tribes of the Great Liao Dynasty. Eight recessed niches are arranged on both sides of the building, housing statues of the chieftains of each tribe. A continuous sloped roof spans above the eight niches, symbolizing "the unification of the eight tribes" and faithfully reflecting the architectural style of the Liao Dynasty. Statues of a black ox and a white horse stand on either side of the main entrance.

Construction officially began in May 2013. The civil engineering has been finished, and all interior exhibition decoration has been completed. The museum opened on a trial basis on August 16 this year.

The museum houses permanent and temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibitions focus on local history and folk customs, supplemented by local chronicles covering historical evolution, major events, education, culture, art and intangible cultural heritage. The first floor presents the chronological history of Kangping through the ages. The second floor features modern and contemporary history, folk customs, as well as temporary displays on economy, education, paintings and calligraphy.

After opening to the public, the museum will effectively preserve local cultural relics, promote folk culture, improve the public cultural service system and cultural infrastructure, elevate the cultural image of Kangping, and boost the county’s economic and social development.
