Mount Baerhu stands at the terminal spur of the Yiwulu Mountain Range belonging to the Yanshan Mountains, marking the edge of the mountainous Central Plains region. It covers an area of 14.8 square kilometres, including 1,987 hectares of woodland covered with primeval secondary forests.
As the highest peak in Shenyang, Mount Baerhu impresses visitors most deeply with its four distinctive traits: loftiness, grace, spiritual vitality and uniqueness.
Loftiness
Mount Baerhu, the highest peak in Shenyang, is situated in Sijiazi Mongolian Township, Faku County, Shenyang. Its main peak reaches an altitude of 446.7 metres above sea level, ranking first among all peaks in Shenyang.
Grace
In spring, the mountain is covered with luxuriant vegetation, blooming wild flowers and singing birds.
In summer, visitors wander among blossoms and shaded woods, breathing fresh air in this vast natural oxygen bar. Flying azure-winged magpies and tits, as well as hopping hares, squirrels and sika deer, allow people to fully embrace the vitality of the primitive forest.
In autumn, the mountain sheds its green coat and puts on a colourful robe. Tempting fragrance of wild fruits drifts across the graceful mountain woods.
In winter, everything is wrapped in thick frost and snow. The boundless forest looks like a beauty in white wedding dress, displaying charming grace amid bitter cold winds.
Spiritual Vitality
Endowed with outstanding people and rich history, Mount Baerhu bears witness to the valiant battles of the Eight Banners soldiers and the political marriages between Manchu and Mongolian nobles in the Qing Dynasty.
First, it is the burial place of Senggelinqin, an important minister of the Qing Empire.
He served three emperors: Daoguang, Xianfeng and Tongzhi. Loyal to the throne, he won deep favour from the imperial family. When the Daoguang Emperor passed away, Senggelinqin was appointed one of the regent ministers. He commanded the army and achieved a crucial victory in the Battle of Dagu Fort. This Mongolian noble was regarded by the Qing court as an indispensable pillar of the nation. After his death, he was buried on Mount Baerhu in Faku.
Empress Dowager Cixi once remarked: "As long as Senggelinqin lives, the Great Qing survives; once he is gone, the Great Qing will perish." Forty-seven years later, the Qing Dynasty collapsed amid unrest.
Second, Princess Gulun Duanmin.
She was the second daughter of Prince Jidu, cousin of the Shunzhi Emperor, and was adopted as the emperor’s foster daughter. In 1670, the ninth year of the Kangxi reign, she married Bandi, Prince Darhan. She was conferred the title Princess Gulun Duanmin in 1723, the first year of the Yongzheng reign, and passed away seven years later at the age of seventy-seven. She lived in Faku and was interred in the Princess Mausoleum.
Third, Princess Heshuo Duanrou.
She was the eldest legitimate daughter of Prince Yunlu, the 16th younger brother of the Yongzheng Emperor, and was raised in the imperial palace from the early Yongzheng period.
In 1730, she married Borjigin Jimut Dorji, Prince of Horqin. She received the title Princess Heshuo Duanrou the next year and died in the nineteenth year of the Qianlong reign at forty years old. She spent her life in Faku and was also buried in the Princess Mausoleum.
Uniqueness
Sijiazi Township, where Mount Baerhu is located, is the only Mongolian township under the administration of Shenyang. Many Mongolian traditions are still preserved in local language, etiquette and daily food.
During traditional festivals, locals dress in bright ethnic costumes, singing and dancing, forming another wonderful scenic sight of Faku
