Sanxi Bridge

Sanxi Bridge, also known as Caifeng Bridge, stands approximately 2.5 kilometres southwest of Liujin Village, Dahu Township, Minhou County. Constructed in the 25th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1845), it is a single-span wooden arch covered bridge spanning the confluence of three streams: Xuexi Stream, Yuanli Stream and Dongxi Stream. Aligned on a north-south axis, the bridge stretches 32 metres long and 5.4 metres wide.
Nestled between sheer precipices, its abutments rest on massive cliff boulders as natural foundations, reinforced with laid granite slabs to support the entire frame. The arch framework is assembled from 27 robust fir logs evenly divided into three groups of nine interlocking parallel timbers, forming the arched load-bearing structure. Round logs are laid lengthwise atop the wooden arch as girders.
A timber-framed covered gallery rises over the deck, extending across twelve bays. It adopts a post-and-lintel wooden structure supported by four columns under a hanging hill roof. The deck is paved with horizontal wooden planks, flanked by wooden balustrades, while rain shields are fitted beneath the eaves, and long benches line the interior of the gallery. Statues of Buddha are enshrined at the bridgehead.
An ink inscription on the roof purlin of the gallery reads:
"Erected on an auspicious day of the fifth lunar month, the Renyin year, the twenty-fifth year of the Daoguang reign of the Great Qing Dynasty; Zhou Liansi from Huokou, Luoyuan County, master carpenter in charge of construction."
Couplets are inscribed on all columns and beams, including:
  1. The giant bridge soars high like a rainbow hanging mid-air; the winding mountain path draws near, as if a dragon coils beside the well.
  2. This place seems where King Wen once sheltered from rain; the stream ahead evokes Zilu seeking the ferry crossing.
  3. With discerning eyes, one may follow the tale of Zhang Liang receiving the scroll at the Qi Bridge; humbly dwelling among common folk, he knew the sage pushing the cart by the Wei River.
  4. Walk a few more paces, every household in the village fills one with boundless delight; gaze toward the three mountains, layered trees and undulating heights unfold unparalleled wonders.
According to local tradition, all couplets on Sanxi Bridge were composed and handwritten by Zhang Yige, a renowned scholar from Luoyuan.
Sanxi Bridge is an outstanding masterpiece forged by the collective wisdom of skilled craftsmen hailing from five counties. It bears immense value for research into Minhou’s transportation history and ancient bridge-building techniques. In March 1989, it was designated a Cultural Relic Protected Unit of Minhou County
