Prefectural Confucian Temple
The founding date of the Prefectural Confucian Temple before the Song Dynasty is unrecorded. It was first rebuilt in 1070 (the third year of the Xining reign) by Wu Zhongfu, a Hanlin Academy scholar and then magistrate of the prefecture. The temple was destroyed by war in the late Yuan Dynasty and underwent renovations in both the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the early years of the People’s Republic of China, its major structures remained intact, with a layout divided into three axes:
- Central axis: Memorial Gateway, Lingxing Gate, Pan Bridge, Memorial Halls for Distinguished Officials, Memorial Halls for Local Sages, Halberd Gate, Eastern Wing, Western Wing, Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Shrine, and Liuzhong Shrine.
- Eastern axis: The Academy, featuring Kuixing Tower at the front and classrooms and teaching buildings at the rear.
- Western axis: Minglun Hall and other structures.
During the Cultural Revolution, structures including Dacheng Hall were demolished. Today, only the Yuan-dynasty Halberd Gate and its three flanking side rooms on both the east and west sides survive正定县人民政府.
The Halberd Gate stands at the front of the temple’s central axis, facing south with a northward orientation. It has a width of five bays and a depth of two bays, built as a single-eave overhanging gable structure covered with blue tiles正定县人民政府. Its timber frame follows the "six-rafter roof with central bay supported by three columns" configuration正定县人民政府. Bracket sets (dougong) are installed under both the front and rear eaves, arranged sparsely: three sets between the columns of the central bay and two sets in each of the side bays, designed in the "four-layer bracket with single lower bracket arm" style正定县人民政府. On the outer bracket arms, floral heads project below the sloping bracket arms, with bracket-top blocks above, a decorative head in the middle, and a continuous tie beam supported above正定县人民政府. On the inner side, floral brackets rise from the main bracket blocks, connecting to the rear ends of the sloping arms, which curve steeply upward to interlock with the tie beams under the lower purlins正定县人民政府. The flanking side rooms are later additions, each with three bays and a hard gable roof covered with grey tiles正定县人民政府. As the only surviving Yuan-dynasty structure in Zhengding, the Halberd Gate holds significant historical research value. It was designated a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council in 2006正定县人民政府
