Wuluozhongli Mountain, also known as Heng Mountain, is situated 30 kilometres southwest of Longzhouping, the county seat of Changyang Tujia Autonomous County along the Qingjiang River in Yichang City, Hubei Province. It is 25 kilometres away from the Geheyan Hydropower Station. The entire mountain looks as if floating on the lake surface, with its main peak rising to 397.5 metres above sea level. The local praise that Changyang Tujia Autonomous County is "the ancient land of Heng Mountain and the famous territory along the Yishui River" takes this mountain as its symbol.
According to historical records, Wuluozhongli Mountain is the birthplace of the Ba people, the ancestors of the Tujia ethnic group. Legend holds that it was where Lin Jun, the forefather of the Ba people, was born and where he won the chieftainship by throwing a sword. Relics of the Ba people can still be found here. For this reason, Wuluozhongli Mountain has long been regarded as a sacred mountain for Tujia people from Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou to trace their origins and worship their ancestors, drawing an endless stream of pilgrims.
When exploring the ethnic origin of the Ba tribe led by Lin Jun, ancestor of the Tujia people, the place name "Wuluozhongli Mountain" carries great historical significance.
Book of the Later Han contains the following account of Lin Jun, ancestor of the Ba people:
"The barbarians of Nan Commandery under Ba Commandery originally had five clans: the Ba, Fan, Shen, Xiang and Zheng clans. All of them originated from Wuluozhongli Mountain. On the mountain were two caves, one red and one black. The children of the Ba clan were born in the red cave, while those of the other four clans were born in the black cave."
This passage was recorded by Fan Ye of the Liu Song Dynasty in the Southern Dynasties, quoted from Shi Ben (Genealogy of Ancient Rulers). Compiled by official historians in the Warring States Period or the Western Han Dynasty, Shi Ben recorded the surnames, genealogies and settlements of nobles from the Yellow Emperor down to the Spring and Autumn Period. The records about Lin Jun’s hometown also mention "Wuluozhongli Mountain" as well as the "red cave and black cave", consistent with Book of the Later Han.
Wuluozhongli Mountain is a combined name for Wuluo Mountain and Zhongli Mountain.
The character luo is a local dialect term in Changyang, serving as a measure word meaning "heap" or "stack". Therefore, Wuluo Mountain refers to five hills or a mountain with five peaks.
Heng Mountain has five peaks: the first one is named Hengshanbao, and the second is Kuitou Mountain. Originally named Wuluo Mountain, the character wu (five) was later mistakenly written as its homophone wu (martial), hence the name Wuluo Mountain.
To the east of Heng Mountain, separated by the Changyang Stream, stands Zhongzhongnao Mountain. According to ancient legend, a bell once hung on this hill. Since the stream divided it from Heng Mountain on the northern bank of the Qingjiang River, it was called Zhongli Mountain (the Separated Bell Mountain). Later historians combined Wuluo Mountain (Heng Mountain) and Zhongzhongnao Mountain (Zhongli Mountain) into the unified name Wuluozhongli Mountain.
