Enshi Tusi City: Explore Tujia Traditions
This landmark best embodies Tujia culture and the ancient Tusi system, known as China’s No.1 Tujia City. The towering grand gate stands at the entrance, imposing and exquisitely decorated, presenting a majestic vibe the moment you step inside.
The sturdy city walls evoke the grandeur of the Great Wall and the mystique of the Southern Great Wall. Like a giant dragon, they fully enclose the compound. More than just a residence, the Tusi City was once a territory, an imperial stronghold and a symbol of power, perfectly recreating the glory of the Tusi regime.
At the foot of the walls lies the Nine-Courtyard Hall, an architectural complex modeled after traditional Tujia stilt houses. It integrates stilt dwellings, hand-waving halls, official halls, academies, terraces and opera stages. The pavilions and towers are arranged in a staggered layout, magnificent and grand.
Traditional Tujia folk customs can be seen everywhere here. The most iconic activity is the Hand-waving Dance. From the 3rd to the 15th day of the first lunar month every year, locals gather here singing folk songs and dancing to honor ancestors and pray for blessings. Joy unites everyone amid the singing and dancing.
