Zhuangyuan Bridge in Qidong County sits in Guiyang Town. It is a five-span stone arch bridge with a total length of 80 meters, a width of 8 meters and a height of 9 meters, spanning the confluence where the Bai River flows into the Xiang River. Stone railings and a bridge pavilion are built on its deck.

According to legend, when the stone bridge was completed, a newly conferred top scholar (Zhuangyuan) happened to pass by. Crowds thronged both ends of the bridge. The craftsman who oversaw the construction intended to test the scholar, telling him he could only cross the bridge after matching an antithetical couplet. The stonemason recited: "The grand bridge just finished, open to all hereafter; We compose poems and couplets, moved by scenes, driven by aspirations. What thoughts stir your heart, honorable top scholar?"

After a moment of pondering, the scholar replied readily: "This humble student newly honored, soon to take official duty; I shall serve the nation and benefit the people, chasing neither fame nor fortune. All elders here need have no cause for worry."

Everyone present hailed his reply as brilliant. The bridge was then officially named "Zhuangyuan Bridge", meaning Top Scholar Bridge.
