Siming Mountain is situated in western Qidong and belongs to the spur of the Yuecheng Ridge under the Five Ridges mountain range. There are three peaks with an altitude of over 1,000 meters here. Its main peak, Tengyun Ridge, stands at 1,044 meters, second only to Zhurong Peak of the Southern Heng Mountain across Hengyang Prefecture. Standing atop the summit, visitors can overlook four counties: Lingling, Qidong, Dong'an and Shaoyang, hence its alternative name Siwang Mountain (Four-View Mountain).
In 2003, geologists discovered graptolites in Siming Mountain. Graptolites are marine organism fossils dating back more than 400 million years to the Ordovician Period. This proves that Siming Mountain has stood tall for over 400 million years. The area boasts lofty and elegant peaks covered in lush forests that present distinct scenery in every season, resembling a painted folding screen. Scenic spots such as the Immortal Chessboard, Five Maidens Congratulating the Elderly, Fairy Combing Her Hair, Valley of Unbroken Affection and Empress Rows scatter all over the mountain. Every spot carries charming folk tales, offering ever-changing vistas and endless delights as one wanders along the trails.
Graceful, serene Siming Mountain has long been regarded as an auspicious geomantic site. In ancient times, forty-nine temples including Siming Temple and Ziyun Temple dotted the mountain. During the Tang Dynasty, noble descendants Gui Liu and Gui Shen chose this place as their seclusion. Since ancient times, Siming Mountain has abounded in ancient famous trees as well as rare birds and beasts. Legend records that a main beam for the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City of Beijing, built in the Ming Dynasty, was hewn from a nanmu tree harvested here. Fourteen ancient trees still survive in Datang Village of Siming Mountain, each aged more than 300 years.
More than ten varieties of rare tree species thrive here, including white yulan magnolia, ginkgo, nanmu, coin tree, cyclocarya paliurus and amorpha fruticosa. Dozens of wild animals roam the mountains year-round, such as civets, wild boars, pangolins, hawk-eagles and night crows. Siming Mountain was officially designated a provincial forest park in 2004.
