The Three Religions Temple stands one kilometre south of Loufan County Seat. Its original site lies in the submerged area of today’s Fenhe Reservoir. First built during the Northern Zhou Dynasty of the Northern Dynasties, it features typical architectural style of the Song Dynasty and is an ancient temple integrating Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
When the Fenhe Reservoir was under construction in 1958, the Mahavira Hall of the Three Religions Temple was relocated to Loufan County Seat. The entire hall is a wooden structure with elaborately painted beams and carved pillars. Chiwen ornaments are installed on both sides of the roof ridge. Thirteen sets of huge lotus-shaped brackets are laid on the upturned eaves of the front courtyard. The whole building is exquisitely structured, magnificent and superbly crafted.
Starting from 1999, with the approval of Taiyuan cultural relics administration, the temple was moved again to the present site strictly in accordance with its original scale and architectural style. Inside the main hall sit statues of the founders of the three religions: Sakyamuni of Buddhism, Lord Laozi of Taoism and Confucius of Confucianism. There are also statues of Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Guanyin and the Eighteen Arhats. The mountain gate and the Hall of the Three Western Saints have also been renovated, reproducing the exquisite grand ancient architecture and profound religious culture.
In September 2000, the temple was designated as a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Taiyuan City.
