Yunding Mountain in Loufan County is Taiyuan’s premier eco-tourism destination. It boasts the highest elevation in the city, the most spectacular mountain and river scenery, the freshest air, and the richest diversity of wild flora and fauna.
Yunding Mountain stands two kilometres southwest of Dushihe Village, Miyuzhen Township, Loufan County, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. Its main peak rises to 2,789 metres above sea level, ranking among the towering summits deep in the Lüliang Mountains. The mountain earns its name for its precipitous ridges piercing straight into the clouds. The whole mountain is blanketed by dense primeval forests, covering a scenic area of more than 40,000 mu. With clear mountains, limpid waters, plunging waterfalls, murmuring brooks, towering ancient trees, lush grass and drifting white clouds, it is truly an ideal eco-tourism resort.

Natural Scenery

Ancient trees cover the entire mountain, with verdant pines and cypresses, as well as luxuriant poplars, elms, birches and willows. Jagged rocks scatter across the slopes, and clear springs gurgle everywhere, perfectly embodying the poetic line “Clear spring flows over the stones”.
On a cliff deep in the woodlands leading to the front peak of Yunding Mountain, there is a magnificent waterfall resembling the Water Curtain Cave on Huaguoshan Mountain. It brings to mind Li Bai’s famous verse: Its torrent dashes down three thousand feet, As if the Silver River fell from the ninth heaven, depicting the waterfalls on Lushan Mountain.
Yunding Mountain remains a pure and pristine wilderness.
In spring, blooming wild flowers fill the air with sweet fragrance, soothing visitors’ minds and lifting their spirits.
In summer, bright sunshine covers the summit while clouds linger halfway up the mountain. It is common to see cloudless skies atop the peak, thunderstorms and dark clouds on the mountainside, and heavy rain falling at the foot of the mountain. During the hottest midsummer days, cool breezes sweep across the summit, free from scorching sunlight, making it an excellent summer retreat. Even amid the sweltering dog days of summer, perennial ice that never melts can still be found here, bringing a sharp chill like early spring.
In autumn, the whole mountain is dyed red and gold by colourful foliage. Wild peaches and mountain fruits ripen in abundance for tourists to pick and taste.
In winter, heavy snow covers every corner, turning the mountain into a vast snow-covered forest.
All visitors are reluctant to leave once they behold such enchanting scenery.

Fairyland on Earth

When you wander through the forests and finally reach the mountain top, a broad alpine grassland unfolds before your eyes. White clouds drift slowly past travellers, creating the sensation of stepping into a celestial palace.
The meadow is carpeted with green grass and wild blossoms, dotted with herds of cattle and horses. Several natural celestial lakes hold clear rippling water. According to legend, these were once watering places for the warhorses of Yuchi Gong, a renowned general of the Sui Dynasty.
If you stay overnight on the summit or climb up before dawn, you can witness the stunning Sunrise over Yunding Peak, comparable to the famous sunrise over the East China Sea on Mount Tai.

Strategic Military Stronghold

Beyond its stunning natural beauty, Yunding Mountain is also a celebrated historical site. Thanks to its steep and perilous terrain, it has long served as a vital military pass and a contested strategic stronghold since ancient times.
On the eastern slope, a mountain ridge is known as "One Flag Ridge". Local historical records note that this was the battlefield where Mu Guiying, a celebrated female general of the Northern Song Dynasty, fought against Liao troops. The ridge got its name because the army banner was once planted here.
At the foot of the mountain lies a village named Dayangping. It was here that Mu Guiying fought with Yang Zongbao before the two fell in love and got married.
A Complete Account of Suppressing the Bandits in Jiaoshan, compiled during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, records that in the 3rd year of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty (1630), Li Zicheng, the Dashing King, dispatched his general Wang Gang to build stockades here with 100,000 peasant insurgents. After Li Zicheng’s uprising failed, the mountain became the main base of the remaining rebel troops — the Jiaoshan peasant army. Led by Li Shukong, Li Zongsheng, Fu Qingshan and others, the rebels resisted feudal rule of the Ming and Qing dynasties for more than 40 years. The army was brutally suppressed by the Qing government in the 10th year of the Kangxi reign (1671), with blood staining the mountain forests.
During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the 358th Brigade of the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army waged guerrilla warfare on Yunding Mountain and dealt heavy blows to the invaders. Many heroes sacrificed their lives here; their noble souls live on as tall evergreen pines standing forever green.

Natural Botanical and Zoological Garden

With cool summers, frequent mist, thick woods, abundant water resources and a superb ecological environment, Yunding Mountain is a paradise for wild animals and plants.
The mountain is home to 285 species of wild birds and mammals, including first-class national protected animals such as brown eared pheasants, leopards, black storks and golden eagles. More than 140 species of woody plants and over 2,700 species of herbaceous plants grow here, among which over 100 varieties are traditional Chinese medicinal herbs including codonopsis, honeysuckle, coltsfoot, bupleurum and platycodon.
Local mountain mushrooms such as cloud mushrooms, topsoil mushrooms and larks rank among the local specialties. Their flavour surpasses the mushrooms from Wutai Mountain and rivals those grown on Changbai Mountain in Northeast China.
