The Sipsong Panna branch of the Buddhist College of Yunnan Province is the only place where young Dai and Bulang can learn Dai Buddhist culture, while at the same time studying subjects belonging to the national-level school curriculum. It is also a space for cultural exchange in Sipsong Panna.
The Dai people possess a long cultural tradition and follow Theravada Buddhism: all males must have their head shaved and become a monk in their local temple at a certain age, in order to receive a religious education. In the temple, apart from following the precepts, reciting the Buddhist scriptures, and learning the Dai script, Dai boys can also become familiar with the traditional techniques of production, calendrical system, literature, and history of the Dai.
Up to this day, Buddhist education occupies a fundamental position among the Dai. Because of this, temple education and public school education are imparted together at the Buddhist College, becoming a peculiar feature of local Buddhist culture.
