6. Lincheng Thin-Shell Walnuts
Lincheng County sits on the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains, where hills account for 85.2% of the total land area. The soil is mainly gneiss-derived, moderately alkaline and rich in calcium, perfect for growing thin-shell walnuts.
The shells crack easily by hand without tools. The nutmeat is fragrant, rich in fat, protein, calcium, iron and other minerals. Beneficial for brain development and intellectual improvement, these walnuts have become a fashionable healthy food.
7. Fugang Apples
Fugang Apple is a special product of Neiqiu County, Hebei Province. It gets its name from Fugang Villa (formerly Gangdi Village, renamed in 2001) deep in the Taihang Mountains.
Rolling green hills, fresh air, abundant sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night greatly boost sugar accumulation. The moderately alkaline sandy soil is rich in phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The apples have superior internal quality, with most indexes above the national average: firm flesh, minimal fibre and fine texture.
Tailored to local natural conditions — an altitude of 500–1,200 metres, a daily temperature gap of 15℃, and moderately acidic gneiss soil — technicians selected and improved Fuji apple trees through hundreds of trials over several years. Three fine strains were bred: Fugang No.1, No.2 and No.3.
These apples have neat shapes, crisp juicy flesh, balanced sweet and sour taste, delicate honey fragrance and excellent storage tolerance. They contain abundant amino acids, minerals and trace elements beneficial to human health.
Test data: fruit firmness 18.9 lbs/cm², water content 89.3%, low fibre, crisp and juicy pulp. Total sugar 8.7%, sucrose 15.1%, soluble solids 16.1%, titratable acid 0.295%, juice pH 3.3, with strong typical aroma.
Fifteen out of its 18 amino acid indicators exceed the national average level.
8. Nanhe Golden Millet
Nanhe Golden Millet is premium millet with plump golden grains. It produces thick aromatic congee and boasts high nutritional value, ideal for health care, beauty maintenance and gift-giving.
The seed stock was introduced from Beijing Jingu Group and cultivated in Nanhe County. The neutral soil, balanced water hardness, high organic content and pollution-free cultivation (no chemical fertilizers or pesticides) yield millet rich in trace elements and amino acids. Porridge made with this millet is sticky, fragrant and mellow after only 10 minutes of boiling. It nourishes the liver and stomach, replenishes vital energy and strengthens the body. A local proverb goes: "Ordinary millet is shared sparingly; Nanhe golden millet is enjoyed freely together."
According to General History of Nanhe Culture, during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, Prime Minister Song Jing, a native of Nanhe, presented his hometown millet to the imperial court. The empress was amazed by its flavour and named it "Golden Millet", an official royal tribute. To honour Song Jing’s contribution, the county’s most beautiful main road was named Song Jing Avenue.
Sanguandian Village north of the county seat has another well-known story. In the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, three scholars travelling north to take the imperial examinations were robbed and seriously injured. They stayed with an elderly local woman and survived entirely on millet porridge, making a miraculous full recovery. All three passed the top grade in the exam. To repay the millet that saved their lives, they planted three cypresses and built an arch bridge carved with grain ears. The village was then renamed from "Big Pigsty" to "Sanguandian". The three cypresses and the stone arch bridge still stand today.
9. Renxian Tall White Green Onions
Tall White Green Onions were introduced to Renxian County from northwest China and have thrived here ever since. The plants grow taller and sturdier than any other green onion variety at home and abroad. The white stalk usually reaches 50 centimetres, with a maximum length of 60 centimetres. It features green tops and snow-white stalks, crisp tender texture and sweet aromatic taste. People describe it as embodying the integrity of a noble gentleman: pure and upright.
Legend says Zhao Wenbing repeatedly presented these onions to the imperial court. The Longqing Emperor bestowed upon them the title "King of All Green Onions".
In 2008, the then Premier of the State Council inspected agricultural production within the protected growing zone of Renxian Tall White Green Onions and encouraged farmers to develop the vegetable industry. Chen Quanguo, then Governor of Hebei Province, also visited Xingtai to guide local vegetable farming development.
10. Zepan Lotus Roots
Zepan Village in Longyao County is an ancient wetland settlement on the historic land of Emperor Yao, perfectly suited for growing large white lotus roots. Longyao Zepan Lotus Root is a large white variety with snow-white compact tubers. The holes are arranged extremely regularly: one large central hole surrounded by six small oval holes. It takes its name from its origin in Zepan Village, Longyao County.
Unique from ordinary lotus roots: when broken apart, fine silken threads remain connected between the segments. Fresh roots fall with a clear crisp sound like shattering jade. The flesh is sweet, crisp and full of thick juice. The tubers stay fresh without discolouration for days after harvest, and remain intact for one month soaked in clean water. Most lotus roots elsewhere have six holes, while only Zepan roots have seven.
They are not grown in natural ponds but in man-made field ponds irrigated purely with well water. Combined with meticulous farming, this special water and soil create the one-of-a-kind root.
