Yuquan Temple
Yuquan Temple is originally located in Huangsi Village, forty li northwest of Xingtai. It was first built during the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty (627–649 AD) and famous for three unique treasures.
According to legend, Emperor Shun of the Yuan Dynasty once took refuge near the temple when being pursued by Zhu Hongwu, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Later Zhu Hongwu stationed his troops and fed horses here, so the temple was renamed Huangsi (Imperial Temple).
First constructed in the Tang Dynasty and reconstructed in the Yuan Dynasty, the main hall and side halls are magnificent brick-and-wood buildings with typical Yuan-style carved beams and painted rafters, which are rarely seen today. Unfortunately, poor long-term preservation has made this ancient building lose its original charm.
Note: The Yuquan Temple in Dangyang, Hubei mentioned in the original text is omitted in the scenic introduction of Xingtai to avoid geographical confusion.
Qiannanyu
Qiannanyu Ecotourism Zone is situated in Jiangshui Town in western Xingtai County. It has more than 80 natural and cultural attractions grouped into ten zones including the Anti-Japanese University Memorial Zone, Ecological Sightseeing Zone and Huashan Scenic Zone.
With beautiful mountains and rivers and pleasant weather, it serves as a comprehensive resort for patriotic education, scientific investigation, sightseeing, summer retreat and leisure.
At the entrance stand the Exhibition Hall, Monument and huge relief sculptures of the Anti-Japanese University, a national patriotic education base.
Scenic spots such as Penholder Mountain, Courage-Training Gorge, Axe-Chopped Peak, Big Dipper Pavilion and Wenchang Pavilion scatter across the vast forest.
The Exotic Fruit Garden grows American red globe grapes, Australian autumn juicy peaches, Ukrainian cherries and other fine varieties.
Thousands of ancient chestnut trees from the Tang Dynasty grow alongside dozens of medicinal plants including American ginseng, eucommia, salvia miltiorrhiza and honeysuckle, forming a marvelous natural view.
There are also plant fossils dating back 1.4 billion years, ancient Great Wall ruins, Zhigaoyan and Hot Spring Temple.
Qishan Lake
Qishan Lake Scenic Area is located in Lincheng County, 60 kilometers south of Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province.
Covering a vast water area of 800 hectares, the lake is like a huge sapphire mirror embedded on the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains.
The area has profound Buddhist culture. A 50-meter-high white marble Guanyin statue stands tall against Qishan Mountain, facing the lake, standing on a lotus flower and holding a holy vase, spreading blessings to the mortal world.
Tianti Mountain
Tianti Mountain Tourist Area is located in Dongniuzhuang west of Xingtai, 22 kilometers from the city center.
Steep and towering mountains rise abruptly, with over a thousand stone steps leading straight toward the clouds.
A cluster of ancient caves spreads across the mountainside, interconnected in a winding and mysterious layout. Inside the caves are various stalactites, stone flowers and stone waterfalls shaped like humans and animals.
At the foot of the mountain lies Jinshui Cave. Boating among lamplights and ripples, visitors feel like wandering in fairyland.
Standing on Longevity Peak, the summit, you can overlook encircling mountains, villages, farmlands and misty lakes.
In the western part of the scenic area, Cold Wind Cave is peerless, Sword Gorge features knife-cut cliffs, and Black Dragon Pool holds dark green quiet water, presenting wild natural charm.
It is also the hometown of Niu Gao, a famous general resisting the Jurchen troops in the Southern Song Dynasty. General Niu once defended this area relying on the mountain barriers.
Zhangguolao Mountain
Zhangguolao Mountain, also known as Immortal Weng Mountain, lies 15 kilometers west of Xingtai.
It is a national AA-level scenic area and one of the first batch of provincial scenic spots in Hebei.
According to Tang steles on the mountain, it was originally called Wufeng Mountain. The Taoist Zhang Guo from Guangzong lived in seclusion here and later became one of the Eight Immortals.
Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty respected Laozi as his ancestor, promoted Taoism over Buddhism, and granted Zhang Guo the title of Immortal Weng. He renamed Wufeng Mountain as Immortal Weng Mountain, built Qixia Temple and turned the cave into Immortal Weng Cave.
As early as the Ming Dynasty, the Ancient Immortal Cave was listed as one of the Eight Sights of Xingzhou.
The pine and cypress trees here are spectacular: twisted cypresses cover the southern slope, while arrow-shaped pines grow on the shady northern slope.
A thousand-year-old Bitter Dream Pagoda tree on the mountainside is even more magical. It blooms early in the morning on the 8th day of the third lunar month during the temple fair and withers completely by dusk when the fair ends, adding a mystical atmosphere to the annual event.
Its fragrance refreshes the mind and promotes health, so the tree is regarded as the mountain’s guardian treasure.
